In fact this type of vaccine is relatively modern, and it is very well understood indeed; both its relatives and its modelling indicated that the worst that could happen - barring the miniscule numbers who react badly to all / any vaccines - was a bit of nausea and, most relevantly, little or no effect against the virus.

The problem is it worked too well. They have gone from successfully distracting their publics from the shortages of vaccines, to creating mass scepticism regarding vaccine efficacy and safety. Meaning fewer take the jab, meaning a longer and more widespread problem with the virus...
