So when your cattle are booked into the abattoir a week in advance how are they supposed to control throughput when a change in the weather can cause chaos?
If only they hadn't driven all the local abattoirs out of business, forcing our livestock into journeys of over 65km to slaughter.
Coming back from Carlisle today, would I have had to stop and return when the temperature dropped near Brough on the A66, it's a total nonsense

Not just abattoir's, a drop in temp and all the markets will be shut, even if you can still do short journeys who is going to take stock to market when the people that can buy them will be very restricted.
the whole thing is completely and utterly bloody stupid and totally unworkable and it will make law breakers of the lot of us

Second time the 65km distance thing has been mentioned. Somewhere, someone has wires crossed.

1. The Consultation specifically cites ALL journeys (@Frank-the-Wool )
2. Welfare is an absolute. You cannot have different deck height parameters or whatever for less than 65kms and more than 65kms. It's been spun out to tame MP's and is not accurate

This is absolutely correct and was put in as an afterthought when they realised the whole thing was farcical. I have a feeling it could be in the long grass for a long time!!

DEFRA appear to have released the "good news on a ad day for news" announcement on this today

Radio4 Farming Today had the RSPCA spokeswoman parroting all the original consultation parameters but I'm at a loss to know how DEFRA can announce anything if they say they are still intending to have dialogue with industry?

Announcing the new standards, Environment Secretary George Eustice said:

We are legislating to ban the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening, and are now developing other measures to improve the welfare of animals during transport.
“We have listened to the concerns raised relating to our proposed changes to transport regulations and have made changes to address these. We will continue to work with industry on the remaining details.”

He's not stated what these proposed changes are but they've stated temperature parameters, head heights and journey times for UK movements are within scope

It would appear that the maximum travel time for cattle will be reduced from 29 hours (14-1-14) to 21 hours, so the UK riven with TB will be unable to bring in dairy replacements

9 hour maximum travel time for calves up to 9 months , so would appear to encompass suckler bred weaned calves

20cm head height "above the naturally held head position" for all species will be impossible to regulate at the roadside (unlike shoulder heights as in Holland) and probably make current multi-deck vehicles obsolete

Meanwhile humans are travelling like this.

How is this going to affect such as Dovecote Park which used to be the sole abattoir for Waitrose beef.
Things may have changed now but I did have a period of rearing Hereford x calves for their scheme. The calves came to us mainly from Cheshire and went on to be finished in the SW then back to Dovecote Park for slaughter and packaging . We can see the abattoir from our place.

probably listened as much as they ever intended to

On the bright side they won't be allowing the import of any product that has been in transport that would not meet these regulations

I am sure the government is aware that sequestering carbon in soil is by far the best way to help reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere, and the way to get that carbon back into the soil is via grazing cattle and sheep, so anything they can do to encourage livestock farming can only be good for anthropogenic climate change. Great call, then to make livestock farming more difficult. George Eustace and Boris Johnson seem intent on the opposite of the British Cycling Team theory of marginal gains, maybe DEFRA is keen on marginal losses!

Anything that has Lord Goldsmith and our dear Carrie involved is going to hurt farming! I sent a letter to my MP and got a reply including a reply from the above lord so I know he is involved.
They have put this out among all the afghan stuff to bury it.
