Boggy.
You can't reliably breed for a roan.
Use something with shorthorn blood and you've the best chance. IIRC in the early post war years BB tried to fix blue roan as part of the 'type', but soon realised they couldn't, so bred for something worth breeding, rather than something pretty.

Guessing it's the Steel Greys and red roans shapey cattle making pretty pennies your after......BB white bull, pure on lim cows to get the steel grey or vice versa for the red roans don't ask me why but it tends to work better! Or a BB X with a blonde

A white, or blue roan Belgium blue bull will likely produce a red roan calf, and be a more valuable animal than a white bred shorthorn. As long as its a proven easy calving bull!
