@Highashgrange Last year I bought a 6 year old knight, 24m 4200l tank isobus control, fill control, auto boom 10 auto sections, steering axles. it was substantially less than your budget and has been a revelation compared to the old sprayer.

I would do a similar area to you, I thought a 4000l tank too big but it’s great, 100ac in one load if needed or 50 at 200l a hectare gives loads of flexibility. On my arable grass and maize I think I get better value for my money having trailed over SP. I don’t use narrow wheels .
If you go back to 24m you will have more choice and there are good machines out there but you may want to stay with 36m.I wouldn’t get too hung up on make but more condition and quality.

How does the auto boom height system work? I think the contractor uses Norac and quite frankly I think it’s a waste of money as it never seems to hold steady.

I kind of hankering after a Agribuggy type machine I think due to the pommier booms which I like. They only go up to 28m looking at used ones though. Another nice one would be a Bateman RB25 with 36m booms as I’ve seen one before which was lightweight yet covered ground quickly.

Rb25’s and 36m is like a tail wagging a dog at times, even some people say don’t put a RB26 on 36m if you’ve got hills, RB35 is much more on top of the job 👍🏻

The auto height systems work by sending waves to the ground and back. I’ve seen some Norac’s that have worked seriously well, especially the UC5. I’ve used a Muller system on a Knight SP and that was seriously good and lovely to use but like them all a poor operator can make them worse, if your passing a wet patch or the track on potato ground and don’t turn off the auto level where the haulm/canopy suddenly disappears the auto level will send the boom crashing into the floor, a good operator will handle 36m on undulating terrain with ease without auto levels and at speed. auto levels just make life easier and more time to concentrate on other things/crop/nozzles plus auto levels are a lot less tiresome after 12+ hours where human reactions start slowing.

It’s a muller system. 1 sensor on each side, it’s the only system I’ve used but seems good. I have quite a number of few ponds which are glorified dips in the ground. I think another sensor on each side would make it better with these, I’m no speed merchant only spraying at about 12kph and the boom responds well.

The height is all set on the tractors screen and also it lifts higher at the headlands

You won’t get much for £40k 😏 for that acreage double your budget and get something that is a pleasure to use, not something that’s gonna need a couple of k spent on it every year to keep it going, should be a few horsch 5Lt 36m on the market nowadays, we have a 4Lt 28m on @1000ac arable 2 farms 20miles apart and it’s a pleasure to use
£80k to spray 500 acres!!

I must be doing something wrong.

Go for a bateman sp or a trailer horsch, chafer. All good. Previous experience of a knight for 3 years i would put it bottom of the list. Just opinion though.
Had a knight EU 3000 24m for 13 seasons before getting the horsch, good enough sprayer, in fact it went to someone on here, but we wanted a change and wanted some more tech so looked around a few machines but ended up with the horsch

Don't know whether this is relevant or appropriate to hijack the thread but i have a 4 year old 6000 litre horsch gs with 32m booms and considering going down to 24m for slurry applications.

Anyone got a 24m horsch considering going up to 32m or thereabouts?

Taken our own spraying back in hand where I work. Only amounts to maybe 2000ac/yr. bought an 4000Litre E series chafer 28m for 15k from memory. Needed a bit of work when we got it but goes well for 20 yrs old. Can go when we like and heaps of spare capacity. Parts readily available and easy to work on. Bells and whistles just more to go wrong on your and our acreage

Have you completely given up your spray contracting business?
