Cabs rusting

Salt air here doesn't help, although over the years I've seen horrendous roofs, for instance some 4200 tractors were crumbling away to red dust at least 15 years ago.
There's no excuse for it. It's just poor roof design amplified by poor rust protection.
How bad is the salt up with you? I’ve got a opico Harrow bought new in 2018, only used in the dry, oiled before putting in the shed, had to cut the lynch pins off this year as they’d seized on 😮

Well I'm two fields-width from the sea and about 250ft higher. The metalwork on sheds facing the sea rusts badly but the metalwork on the sheltered side doesn't rust anything like as badly.
However, that's not the point here. The sheet metalwork is otherwise fine. The roof is very poorly protected and mine is no different to any other of the breed. They should start doing something about it at the design stage. No, they should have done so 30 years ago when they already knew this was a flaw. Obviously longevity was no longer a design priority by then.

My landlords put a new shed up 18 years ago and they didn’t get it galvanised, the stays going across the RSJ’s have rusted off 🤦🏻‍♂️

Every time I get up on the cab roof to do anything to my circa 2004 Massey I think to myself "I really ought to give this top section a lick of paint sometime." Eventually, I will be on the cab and I'll think "I really ought to have painted this when I first noticed it looking a bit tatty." Sometime after that I'll get in one day and my radio wont work and I'll curse about getting a wet ass when I sit down. Anyone happen to know the colour or code for painting the roof of a x4xx MF? Silver Mist maybe?

You can paint the steel part at the top any colour you like as long as it doesn't offend the birds.

Several Same tractors have dissolved here over the years, my current Dorado is not great.
Mostly due to chemical exposure from spraying rather than salt air. Can't say I am surprised but nor can the manufacturer be either as it has been the same for all my life.
MF35 is on original tin and pretty good nick, old IH434 in relatively good nick and that was an orchard sprayer tractor for most of its life.

Whilst it wouldn't be seen as discussed if you want the correct colour it's called MF smoke grey if memory serves me right.

In the topic I keep an eye on our 5400 roof for this very reason, do they rot under the plastic panels first?

Fairly sure the roof skin on our 6615 was all plastic

Our 5465 sun roof was rustin down 1 side. Took it of and did it with grinder and wire brush till it was like a mirror and painted it with a brush as i dont have a sprayer. No1 will ever see the brush marks and least its preserved now. Its a known problem on masseys so if u dont wash it now n again and fix the rust before it rusts through its ur own fault. Its called preventative maintenance just the same as changin brakes before they go and cost more money to sort it out then. Surely the fount of all machinery knowledge mr ducky should of known this 🙈

Yeah right, tranfer the blame for an uniquely pee poor design and quality, made to fail critical component to the owner😂. Just the response I expected from some idiot. Defending the indefensible.

The steel used is also probably of a low standard, it’s probably still got some traces of mini metro in it.....or perhaps more likely Renault 4/ Citroen 2cv.... then called “high tensile steel” probably doomed by the inevitable rust from day one regardless of paint
Much as i like the MF tractors and have owned many of them over the years im 100 % in agreement with the Duck on the quality of the cabs . If only there were traces of mini metro the might last a bit longer !!! Ever since the 600 series MF seem to rely on recycled coke tins for their cabs .
Our ford 8340 has a far more durable and rust safe roof and unlike the 3080 and 6180 masseys we had it wont be departing over cab rust .
The latest addition from the MF stable a 7618 will be closely watched for the dreaded tin worm and treated accordingly , seems to have worked with the 6290 .
But it shouldnt be an issue after all these years MF should get it sorted.
