Iv noticed a number of people now breeding hybrid bulls rather than pedigree, I’m on the hunt for 4 new stock bulls (replacing my lims over next 2 years) and I wondered do they breed as well as pedigree, what’s the pros and cons? I’v seen blue X Blondes which I really like the look of.

from experience with rams...
crossbred sires will give you progeny with a wide variety of traits from sires differing parents.

I wouldnt be worried about using a crossbred, they breed every bit as consistent as a pure if not more so. ....only thing is the colour of the calves can be anything but that doesnt really matter if the conformation is right, they are cheaper to buy aswell which is a major plus.

If using hybrid bulls, and color is important then the color genetics and back ground color genetics of the bull are important. Having said than a number of breeds, BB and Simmie have a range of color genetics. I worked on a farm that had used a Simmie bull over LimXHols cows, the bull, as it turns out was hetro for all the color traits that Simmies have, the end result was 16 different color combinations in the resulting calves.

Bought a Lim X BB last year , which was basically a real heavily muscled lim but a lot cheaper , calving has been an absolute doddle and calves look very uniform so very pleased . As for colour , he’s a black bull , and all calves have either been jet black or red.
