Wasn't the idea of subsidy to keep food cheap for the masses, i fear quite a bit goes to range rover dealership's not its original purpose.

Lets be honest; range rovers are not common place on the average farm.
Most farms that you find a range rover will have a non-farming income that will have more than likely funded the range rover.

Everyone is talking similar rates to 5 years ago then. Not a great deal of money to be made for contractors.

Hence why I am no longer a contractor, and get a contractor in. Was sick of the money all being locked up in ever more expensive kit.
And no money made by the landowner if you want more than £150/acre

No, the subsidy was supposed to keep people on the land, which is what happens in france.
Over there your sub will be stopped if you dont do the work yourself.
The uk as usual has managed to twist the aims of the cap so that subsidy has simply inflated rents, land values and led to mass evictions of tenants, managers and workers

it seems to me if you already have the kit these rates are quite profitable if you have the time to do them

Nothing more profitable, to me at least, than a farmers son in daddy's tractor working for nothing.
True,but then the kit needs swapping,usually for bigger and more expensive.
If you use it, it will wear out and need replacing and repairing. Too many heroes doing this kind of work on marginal cost basis only.

Spraying and spreading only cost that if everything brought to the field and spreader loaded.
£1 extra for trailer, bowser, forklift, man?, or for travelling back to yard.
Edit. And that's without cropping plans/meetings, crop walking, pricing, ordering, unloading and storing inputs.
