Farmers and Holidays

Have always had at least 2 holidays a year
However an increase in stock numbers, elderly parents and kids leaving home meant we struggled to get 3 days in the peak district last back end, and nothing at all planned so far for this year.
Its difficult to find cover when its only for 1 or 2 weeks a year

Permanently "on holiday" here.

We all get off the farm every day and even the kids are in a hurry to get back home... the only way any of us are happy to stay away overnight is if it's on another farm, or sleeping in a tent.

I go away on courses and seminars and meetings in the big smoke and it leaves me cold, homesick, and tired.... not stressed about how the farm is going, because it runs itself, but it simply isn't worth going elsewhere to appreciate what we have at home, with small children that aren't interested in the slightest in anything but nature and science yet.

It's a real bugger :D we'll no doubt attempt proper holidaying in the future, but for now.....

Rarely have a proper holiday mainly because I have no one to go with and I'm a terrible tourist.
Do have the odd weekend away with friends but part of my work involves travelling round the country to work at festivals with a good group of people so doing that and having a few drinks in the evenings is as good as a holiday.
My work is very varied so I'm off the farm a lot anyway, not the same as working in the same place day in day out

We’ve started going on cruises, which we really enjoy. Somewhere different to visit every day and food and entertainment has been good. June is a good time of year for us, before harvest, and all the spraying etc done . Going on one to the Norwegian fiords in June. No fly from Newcastle .
Also like weekends away if possible somewhere with good food and real ale, . Better still if I can fit in a Shrewsbury town away game.
Like has been said, what’s the point in work, if you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labour from time to time.

The Mrs always wanted to do a cruise, I was fairly reluctant myself, had to relent and go on one for our 25th Anniversary, surprisingly I really enjoyed it and we have been on a few now, somewhere different most days and you don't have to keep packing as the "hotel" moves with you. Also try to have a bike trip with the boys whenever we can, off on the Ho chi Minh trail next Feb, looking forward to it, Asia is a fascinating place.

A holiday for me is a reality check, you realise your little patch of business doesn’t mean shite to the world, and there’s much more out there to see. Even a break in the uk gives me the same feeling.
It can be tough having time away with livestock etc but I think it’s worth it, I return re charged and ready to work
Wouldn't it be easier to leave the livestock at home? ;)
