Best way to sharpen them?
Belt grinder
Best way to sharpen them?
You probably need to get @spin cycle to recondition the tension pin on the old ones. Be fine. There is a huge difference between old and new, my old handpieces need a good bit of tension to get a cut, where as the orange ones need hardly any tension. Tbh the first couple of days I struggled to get it right, but I’ve got the feel now View attachment 967537

We need to discuss my introductory commission, PM me if it's easier.

Ours has just gone a bit dull now,not rusty, just nothing like it wasDon't they keep themselves sharp? Mine hasn't been sharpened yet. Bought them 3 National Sheep Events ago.

I've just sat and read 16 pages on shearing handpieces and the only thing I've learnt is that @spin cycle is surely worthy of a knighthood for services to engineering, agriculture and comedy
watch stray wires flipping off mind ,goggles and all thatJust been through this thread again too... Was some banter Can't believe it's all 3 years ago!
My Horner handpiece has done at a guess 2000-2500 sheep now, since I bought it and is properly run in. When my combs and cutters are ground right, it needs absolutely no tension and runs
Had a play about with my grinding - put a lot of interest into my feet positions. I seem to get getting a really good grind now and my kit cuts well.
I'm only sharpening my own now too, so just changing papers once a year - I've learned to keep a wire brush at the grinder. When I rip off the old paper and remove the old glue, disc goes back on the grinder and is run up and I clean it with the wire brush then a quick buff with a cloth as it runs down. Takes seconds and the disc is gleaming - this really helps the glue and paper to stick properly
Good for you ! Tis the way to learn , you will be teaching these boys soon ! Well done for having a go.
He was robbedepilogue
I actually sold the old handpiece for £25 to a collector lad down summezet way
He was robbed
Possibly Like those Cornish then? them 'Somersetters' are possobly a ' little bit strange 'I tell no lie...he pestered me til I sent it
Thought you lost the pin. If thats the handpiece may be new pin not same profile as fork causing friction or not set properly.1/ don't think so
2/ should be good....shearer would know if blunt
3/ when you say oil bath...is it full of oil?...or just oiled......no wool wrapped......bearing on cogs seem tight...no movement......mechanism has a pin that engages on a ball that works on yoke
