Looking round the county (monmouthshire) I was starting to get itchy feet and wonder if I should get mine mown and try and make some hay, but think i'm going to stick to my plan of mid July hay....if the weather will hold.

Not many will get hay this week , grass is green and sappy as . Did a small bit of light crop today , was haylage , was way off being dry enough for hay ,looked fit and been turned twice a day since monday , but the big bales tell a different story
I baled some haylage. Looked about hay in the swath. The bales told a different story. Heavy as hell.
Lots of hidden moisture in the stem.
There will be some very iffy hay made last week.

Just to clarify it’s my field and crop, customer just buying it off me and helping with carting.

haylage first cut all wrapped some into 4ft rounds and just over 1200 conventional wrapped .Baled the first of the hay yesterday and got it all home, was all cut week last monday .With just a little paddock to bale and wrap into conventionals this afternoon been a grand hay/haylage time so long as the thunderstorm doesnt get here first. Have resisted baling too soon as the weather has been with us all the way for once, not massively heavy cuts but well made .Just a couple of acres of new seeds the rest long term leys and improved pp. Another bit to cut in a couple of weeks that was grazed earlier

Quality is really good, provably the best I have ever seen but the yields aren't great. I think the dry weather Feb to May has done a job on the potential. Highest I have seen is 2.37t/acre over a weighbridge and lowest is 1.7t/acre over a weighbridge. We normally expect over 3t/acre.

Biggest cut ever here, with my 14 acres yielding 198 4 string squares. Last yrs first cut was 166 bales of wetter stuff.
locally reports of huge yields with pits overflowing . My son did 1200 bales of haylage off fields that've got away from the cows, without starting on the fields meant for haylage.
