You can get a decent LR independent to fit a properly reman engine in a d4 for sensible money 3.5k i believe, think they are called oval autos on discovery4 forum. They have a really good rep using quality parts. edit, Found his ebay add

price is subject to certain parts being reusable, but he seems like a straight shooter,

I think d4s are amazing vehicles personally and brilliant farmers cars for towing comfort etc.
You can’t compare them to pickups as there not in the same league plus there’s no 7 seaters pickups so no good for my needs!

did not realise d5's suffer the same fate, thats me sticking with the 4 for a while longer...

Did he mention how the 21MY 300hp ingenium engines are going?

To be honest I just asked him what their experience was with the 2l D5. I don't really know a lot about the engines. My last "good" LR was a Disco 2 which I took to 450.000 km before chassis rust killed it. I replaced it with a Disco 4 which was an absolute nightmare - it spent probably as much time in the garage as on the road.. I was happy when it got taken out when parked by a drunk driver.

I'm currently driving a Toyota Landcruiser which is about due for change, but the new ones are (IMO) unbelievably ugly. It would be like driving around in a carnival model of Edna Everage's head.

My land agents 17plate Disco 5, 50k miles, stopped on the road, dash lights on, engine died.
Recovered to main dealer who quoted £17k to replace engine.
Land Rover agreed to suppply engine if he paid labour, then they said as he had the last service done at his local garage no help at all, full wack £17k plus more if it needed a turbo or is it turbos?
He had gone to his local garage in height of the Covid due to not getting anywhere getting it serviced at main dealers.
Anyway, with his garages help re oil used, and spec, etc put on a shitshow of pain to the main dealer and Landrover and they eventually backed down and paid for the replacement engine.
Its going again but along with other problems hes lost faith in it and traded it for a VW Tourag,

As I said they are a shambles of a company and will try anything to get out of warranty claims where the fault is without any doubt due to the product being faulty. They only ever pay lip-service to 'customer care and support'. I mean, if they had instantly decided to replace that faulty engine the owner would have been quite happy, but due to the efforts to avoid responsibility he has lost faith, not so much in the vehicle but in the brand. Result? Yet another customer lost to another brand and probably several future sales lost.
They will never learn. It's been their company ethos ever since I can remember and I dealt with them since the early 1970's, so 50 years now and as I said before they have lost at least 14 new vehicle sales to me because of it and I'm trying my very best not to fall into being a victim in future.

Totally agree, all manufacturers have issues at some time, the measure is how they handle these issues.
Just yesterday set off new implement and it has a major issue. However manufacturer has agreed to lift it this week, take back to the factory and sort it, delivering back next week. If this happens promptly then they retain a customer in the future but so many just dont give a toss.

The thing that surprised me was my agents ignorance of the engine issues.
As soon as he told me and I said something about the shells likely spun and goosed it, he was amazed that,
1 I had heard of the issue,
2 knew what it was,
3 and the fact that I told him there was a lot of folk with the same problem.

This guys sharp, but has no mechanical knowledge or interest and was extremely oblivious to Landrovers known issues.

If he's representative of their customers then its little wonder they can keep churning out poorly engineered products and selling them at big money.

Most drivers have zero interest in the mechanics. Even now if you go look at brochures on cars they will tell you everything but the information on the engine. Hp torque etc.

They are the customers you want and will ultimately keep, lots of bites at the cherry while its still on the road, its called marketing.
