Fly repellent for sheep

Have my ewes at a bit of off ground and flies are bothering them pretty bad. They’re covered with Clik extra and have a garlic bucket, but I wondered if anyone has used spotinor or spot on as a repellent ? And if so can I use it in conjunction with Clik? I don’t really want to bring them home if I can help it as there’s plenty of grass up there and they’re out of the way of their lambs which are still at home

I use 1ml of Spot On/Spotinor on their poll if the flies are bothering them (in certain fields here). Sheep will have had Clik on usually already.

It doesn't repel them, but it does kill them when they crawl over their heads, so they don't keep bothering them. It usually lasts about a month.

I think Barrier Animal Health used to make a stinky fly repellent spray/dip, but no idea if that company still exists even. They used to sell it as a dip, that you had to put them through every 2 weeks (a smallholder special :censored: ).

spot on or similar , (it doesnt mask smell of already sore heads , so flies still pester ) also a liberal dressing of pine tar spray (liquified stockhome tar)available from horse merchants , tar needs doing every few weeks or after heavy rain

A oil based product with peppermint oil and tea tree oil will repel flies. It will not kill them. But it will stop them from landing on your animals. It will also repel lice and other external parasites.

It does not take much. A couple mils per animal.

Oil based product will last for a few weeks per application, even in the rain.

Do you have any recommendations ?

This is what I use.

.

You could probably formulate your own from the raw ingredients.

We have used Butox Swish cattle pour on on heads of our shearling and stock tups for many years with great success. Especially for the odd few with burst crowns from fighting, seems less savage than using Crovect/Dysect on the head where there is a chance it could drip into their eyes
