Extase potential problems

I have heard from my agronomist today that someone not far from me PE9 postcode, has been harvesting extase with a yield of about 2 t/ha. Apparently KwS are looking into this. Has anyone else had any problems.?

Had been told something similar of a crop near Stafford but didn’t believe it so maybe there is something in it.

My understanding is that Extase isn't very tolerant of late frosts and frosts in May can lead to aborted grain sites. Basically don't drill it too early and not at all in areas prone to late frosts. This is different to Moulin which suffered from poor pollination, particularly if it is wet at flowering. I have 55ha of Extase in the ground so will know the score in the next week or so weather allowing; nonetheless I am reluctant to grow it again however it yields. It seems a shame a variety that is about reducing disease risk introduces a risk we have even less control over.

The cases I am aware of (one case is a client farm) were sown October to mid November - so not particularly early? And on same farm and in adjacent fields is Extase with less symptoms. It is that which is more concerning. The seeming randomness of this 'effect' whatever the cause may be. Of the cases I know of a fungicide programme was applied that was possibly more than the experts would say necessary given the disease tolerance of the variety. And in my case the two fields most affected are full of ergot - which would suggest maybe an open flowering habit issue?? And link to flowering and pollination rather than, or in addition to frost damage. I am aware representatives of KWS have visited some of these sites. What good that will do I doubt! But then I am jaundiced. The variety has done well by many farmers - as we witness on this thread and thus will continue to be widely grown - and successfully I expect. As with many things in life 'it is just one of those things' except when it is you. Cheers.

I was disappointed at the sample; pinged and unfilled grain. Not a patch on the Graham .
Same here.

I'm putting it down to septoria nodorum which came in during that 5" of rain at the end of June beginning of July.

Killed off the flag leaves and got up onto the ears - Graham not troubled much by it (nor Diego  ).

I wanted to grow it for the low risk factor regarding septoria, but now it is potentially the highest risk variety around......im out.

Gleam has done exceptional again and skyscraper has done well enough for a 3rd year.

Extase looked great last year (9t plus potential) and ended up doing about 6.5t/ha. 1t/ha less than Zyatt and 2t less than Gleam. This year it seems to be decent, but reading this thread the risk of an unexpected disaster is a big turn off. @dontknowanything has had two bad experiences with it. We had the same as others - upright ears that never really seemed to finish.

Have heard a report of a similar situation locally of the variety not setting grain properly with very low yields (we are in PE12 so could be the same one someone else mentioned earlier). We were going to try some this Autumn but think we may well give it another year now. It's probably a very small risk but a risk none the less.
It’s a very big risk if it doesn’t produce grains!

This is correct. In addition to poor yields, it also didn’t flow properly in our drier, breaking three chains in ways I’ve never seen before. Will not be touching with a barge pole in future. Shame.

Extase I Exsept

Just received this message this morning from a local friend.

“Working for a customer at the the moment who on 2 fields had extase on one half and Graham on the other extase very disappointing on both sites approx 1.5 ton/ha less than Graham, a huge amount of upright deaf ears in the extase , I hope ours isn’t as bad when we get to it”

There’s going to be some nervous seed merchants and very disappointed farmers if this becomes more widespread. ☹️

I fear mine is similar, tall erect blackened heads of unfilled, no grain set ears and where I have rubbed out grains they appear pinched and have not fully filled.

Been happy with Extase so far, probably cut around 90 ha. Another 90 ish to go. It was going to make up 50% of my wheat are next year.
Really struggling with planned varieties now.

It's a massive shame because ours looked amazing all year. Put some in late October into some very marginal conditions and the way it shrugged off the adversity was one of the more impressive things I've seen crop wise for a while. Earlier than other varieties to help spray timings, but the downside risk is too large.

It sounds to me that people have known there maybe an issue from last year. If that's the case are KwS not obliged to inform us.
