The killing of the sheep is something that we sometimes have to just turn a blind eye to as a result of not having other options, however, seeing poor/rough/ill sheep bought at auction, dumped in a field and left without due care or attention is something i dont want a part of and due to politics and money, my tiny voice will have no effect of anothers business.

On a soft side, i would like an option for the end of life sheep. Ive lambed them, reared them, lambed them and then what? Id like to have a good conscience option where i know the beginning to the end.
ones that have given great service here (as with tups) earn their right to stay and die on the farm,

ive got 2 this year that should have gone last, getting thinner now like but i keep a good eye on them, but due to years of excellent service i keep them about.

they usually have singles when their older anyway and i put them in with twins so they get extra cake when required.

Killing sheep is something you have to turn a blind eye to. What? You're gonna have to explain that to me.

The whole reason I have sheep is to profit from killing them, or selling breeding stock to allow other people to profit from killing them.

A sheep doesn't care wether it dies on the farm or at an abattoir. I think it's more humane to have them slaughtered than allow them to die of starvation/exposure/old age.

Iv got 2 ewes that are my original sheep and I won’t be sending them cull ever.. I’ll take them too abbotair when I feel like they’re in pain of can’t cope… both 13 year old now and still in good condition..

Good Afternoon TFFers.

In recent months a buyer of cull ewes at a local auction has been revealed to have been seriously mistreating them. I wont go into details but im after different/alternative ways for cull ewes with out going to minority cull dealers with little care of welfare.

Im a wee bit soft and have never really liked just packing the poor buggers into a trailer after years of service to be left in a field, some left to die and potentially killed in a way most of us don't agree with.

So I'm In a position now, with a trailer of culls....what other options are there? We thought about getting them slaughtered at a place we use and selling the meat as dog food. Im after ideas, no matter how left field they are. There has to be something better.....
How many ewes are you talking about per year?

exactly, these miserable barstewards above, as if i would keep it then let it starve or die of exposure, how would that be any better than slaughter? im round my stock daily not sure about you guys.... :scratchhead:

if its in pain i will sort it, but i aint sending it on a wagon somewhere miles away stuffed with aload of other ewes, its earned it place on the farm :D

Why would you not just PTS in the field at home? I did my wife's pet for her last year, and a quick shot was far more humane than a journey of any distance.

How do you think sheep die of "old age"? Their teeth wear out, and they can't take in enough calories so their body shuts down. This is especially true in inclement weather.

My local abbotair is 10 minutes away… my ewes get moved by trailer all the time they’re very accustomed too it.. both my old girls had 1 lamb each last year… 1 looked a bit lean at weaning but is in good Nick again now, only missing 1 tooth… anything else goes market as soon as it’s missing a tooth or any other ailment but 2 were where I started so they can stay as long as they are healthy enough too stay even if they’re barren they can have an easy time and get fat on life
