I'm not sure I was much "help" in this instance. 2020 wasn't my favourite year as i've admitted elsewhere and i'm upset with myself that my mistakes have had a big impact on someone else which wasn't the intention at all.
We all make mistakes thats life, providing people are honest when they happen no one should make to much of it. What gets to me is non hands on aspects of the agricultural industry who make massive mistakes, but never put there hands up instead, ignor calls, emails etc for years and think there major mistakes will disappear!( Talking accountants, solicitors, planning advisers and best of all land agents!)

Not sure that pain is the best way to control a tonne of bull-more likely to raise it's adrenalin levels, I would have thought
agree, but the nose ring is the only addition that can 'aid' control, a halter, is completely useless, if a bull decides not to 'obey'. The ring works by discouraging wayward movement, it hurts, bulldogs work the same way, they discourage movement, by causing pain. It is not a nice way, to control a bull, but what other way, is there ? We are talking about shows, not on farm, there is a massive potential risk, a bull still reacts to instinct, and at a show, you are putting that bull, into a completely alien environment to normal.
I don't know the answers, and l like looking at the bulls, at shows, but by being there, those bulls could very easily cause a big problem. That they haven't, is down to the skill, and dedication of the breeders/showmen, and luck. A large 1,000 kg bull, running amok, at a crowded show, isn't a nice thought.

I think iv seen people taking it off at Christmas befor on frosty morning, now thinking I may not quite get the winter cereal in behind, it may have to very early spring instead.
What variety did you go for. You weren't that late getting it in. I had some that waited until late June to germinate last year still off by mid October.
Being organic and possibly shorter on N should actually speed ripening.

Indeed! We're earlier this year anyway so will be difficult to say. But based on some simple maths, I think the difference in calf price is more than the lost 5 days anyway (Am I allowed to say that as a spring calver?!). It's just the cumulative 5 days over say 5 years and how many cows lost from block which could be the issue.
I did the sums a few years ago and couldn't justify using Blues. Then it averaged 7 days over and 10 days at worst.
Kiwi X were coming 5 days early average, 10 at extreme. So we were looking at best part of two weeks extra milk with a Kiwi X without worrying about calving difficulties etc, plus the blues never seem to make the prices people claimed and cost a lot more in feed to get to market
