They aren’t his are you mad!!?? If they are I’m sending him some medicine, he’s obviously ill!!!
Hang on, hang on, unless he’s been asked to judge, in which case he’s had to go Barry big balls an buy the rosette,? After all he is one of there expert finishers!!
I wasn’t the judge.
But the old fella has had a rough year. He was well enough too come with me today for the first time this year. Normally he comes too every sale with me. He’s 82, worked until he’s totally knackered and he still lives for his sheep. So I thought feck it. I’ll buy some real models for the old lad too look at and enjoy. So I bought the sale champions and the second prize. Last loser on the 3rd prize. Some times you just have too push on. It meant a lot too the old man and he’s chuffed too bits with them. It’s worth it just for that. An extra £60/lamb over 10 lambs is nowt compared too what he’s given me over the years.

Well done, as you say its not all about making money, you have to enjoy it too, does your dad still get a trip out to Bentham for his supper now and then

Good on you, mines long gone but he loved something good as well,as you say it’s nothing in the scheme of things and nothing compared to what he’s given you.

I’ve a full load of cull ewes to go tomorrow. As it’s all ewes it shouldn’t be a late finish. Hopefully he hasn’t overdone it today and he’s fit for a ride too Bentham. As he keeps telling me. “This owd age is no use at all lad”

Fair play on all accounts!!! Bet you enjoyed yourself too, get on!!!!
It is good when I can compete for the best. I thought best lambs were cheaper than the swale bred mule sales. Small tuppers/Good runners a strong trade in comparison but still less than I expected.
With regards the Cheviot mules. Tupping lambs were definitely easier than the 1st sale by a good chunk. Whereas the runners were a couple of pound dearer from what I could gather. I wasn’t expecting to buy CM’s at all. I went for blackie bred mules. But strong tuppers around the £140 have a spot on my wagon!

Had a trip to Longtown. Was a pleasure to see @Anymulewilldo pushing the boat out with “The Old Fella” as he calls him keenly watching the trade and constantly whispering words of wisdom to him as the sale went on !
Tupping lambs looked good value against the first sale. Lambs started very steady with a very indifferent run of NCM but trade picked up as the lambs did. Runners could be bought cheaper than I expected with a packet of smart scotch mules to ave £108 and Cheviot mules £115 which wouldn’t have been bought at the first sale.
Coming away caught the trade of the day (admittedly only saw afew) 2 crop cont x ewes £220 and commercial Chev mule 4 crop ewes £158 !!!!

Excuse my ignorance but I thought it was the choice of the auctioneer whether they have a red or green market not the vendor ?
Some have no choice but to go to a red market or on the dead . ...I didn't know they can just request the auctioneer to change it to a green market for the day cos their lambs weren't fat enough and if they did what happens to the tb restricted cattle that go on the same day because its a red market . 🤷‍♂️

You need to tell the auctioneer that they need to change to a green market and as for the TB restricted cattle sell then in special monthly orange markets ( which is what i thought was the only option for TB2 stock anyway to go thru a market )

Runners are ok if you are already in that system
Not so good if you aren’t
I appreciate what your saying but in many ways good quality running lambs at £100 -£115 look very good value for money when you have been selling fat lambs off there mothers and grass circa £100 plus.
There looks like being plenty of keep about this winter and afew runners amongst the hoggs enables you to spread your risk/ exposure in uncertain times and also one way of building up the capital value of the flock without spending it upfront on good shearlings.

There were some cracking runners just over the £100 towards the end of the sale as it cooled down. Right shearling makers!
