I remember once in the mart many years ago I bid on a bunch of beasts but didnt win them the vendor came up after but I cant remember did he give me luck but defo very thankful that I'd run them to decent price

Same happened to me with a ram in the breed society sale, was under bidder on it. It was, at the time, a record price for the breed. Vendor came to me afterwards and thanked me for bidding on it.

Agree with a lot of what you say in both your posts, but pointing out what somebody else is doing wrong doesn't make it right. Don't know much about keepers but I think some do it as well as working full time so they're are doing very nicely. And as for immigrants working for cash it's probably best we don't start about the British on benefits getting paid to do fudge all
British on benefits , there will always be that type in every Western society that has welfare ,if you want to stop it there's only two options , stop the money but then they turn to crime and kids go hungry , the other is a tiny bit fascist and would involve executing them, better to ignore them and keep on top of your own business .

Think you'll find they already turn to crime and kids go hungry, got nothing to do with money it's mindset.
If you ignore the immigrants I'll ignore the benefits cheats

I remember at a fat lamb show and sale there were two brothers who were very competitive and one was judged first and the other second. The first lot were sold and as the second lot came into the pen, before they go into the ring the second brother had a quick word with one of the buyers. He took the these lambs up to £5 above the first lot. Obviously the buyer would get the extra back as luck. Everybody knew what had happened and it caused a lot of amusement

I was in my late thirties before I first heard of luck money. I went to buy some in calf heifers from a farmer/cattle dealer and took my herdsman with me. after we separated the ones that I wanted, the dealer put some cash in my chap's hand and said to me "you don't mind if I give him a bit of luck do you?" I didn't know what he was talking about.

I put luck in the same class as tipping. In this day and age, I see no point and have never done either.

Well 7 pages in and that's been a depressing eye opener. I can't speak of shoots and gamekeepers and 50% overages but a couple of £ given or received graciously and discretely is a tradition and good omen for livestock that I'd be sorry to see go. Judging from some of the comments on here there's folks that would want the milk from your tea rather than offer a visitor a cuppa themselves. Very sad that a farming tradition seems to have descended in to some of the calling on here
