How much GM is already here?

How much GM soya comes into the eu and UK already?

Which EU countries already do or have grown GM groups?

It's a non story. There's GM on the shelves already.
Scientist on the radio yesterday saying gene editing was a much softer process than genetic modification.
Not sure if that was to try to pacify any naysayers out there, but perhaps they're already glued themselves to the M25!

at current crop area and likly fall in area due to conservation the export of crops from uk will be very low so eu export ban dyue to gm will have little effect

we do as alraedy reported import millions of tonnes of gm produced grains and meat that has been fed gm crops

I don’t see the issue with it and hope the EU (where I live) follows suit.

It’s good science with great potential. Why stop it?

If the public/government want less chemicals used then surely they should allow breeders to keep food production possible?

Genetic modification has been occurring since humans first started multiplying the animals or plants that they felt were more desirable. This is just progression.

If a guy or girl chooses a partner with whom they have children with based on the looks of that partner, is that not subconscious modification of the human genome?

If soya meal or products containing soya oil are used then the chances of them being non gm are slim to none. All the protests to stop them just cost the European farmers a pile of money from less chemical usage. Imaging having OSR as your cleanest crop from two applications of what used to be cheap round up or liberty. recently genes have been added to OSR to prevent pod shatter. Maize has made massive leaps in yield from traits added to the varieties. Love it or not most of the crops grown in North America are gm

rape with flea beetle resistance pod shatter gene and roundup resistance would reduce incecticide use to nil eliminate 3 residual herbicides and reduce glyphosate use in my rotation (no need for descicant at harvest )

If that’s the case chem companies will fight tooth and nail to keep the uk gm free. Too much money in their pockets. Experience here is crop input costs don’t change much. It easier ti grow with gm traits bred in but your then paying fir that privilege to the seed companies

As above, Gene Editing is the only thing being considered currently, NOT Genetic Modification.

GE doesn’t facilitate the introduction of DNA from other species, as GM does, so your Roundup Ready crops aren’t going to be allowed still.

Most non-Luddite countries around the world define GE as only what could be achieved through conventional selective breeding techniques (albeit more slowly and expensively).
It is only this technique that is under consideration, and the EU is reported to be looking at it too.

If members of the farming industry fail to understand the difference, what hope of educating the public in the face of such inaccurate claims across the press & social media? :banghead:

We should use the definition of proven safety
currently the tested and approved gm crops have been fed and grown on thousands of millions of acres and fed to billions of animals and billions of people with no discernable difference to non gm crops

Well put Neil. (y)

I had my fill of GM activists online several years ago, when I setup and moderated a GM conference/forum as part of a larger system. The statements and comments were at times quite.... astonishing.

This is genetic modification, pure and simple. You can play games with technicalities and definitions but unless the consumer wants to buy the stuff you are kidding no one.

The consumer, and it seems plenty on this forum, don’t know what GE is though.

Do they not want ‘it’, or do they not want the mythical thing they are being told ‘it’ is?
No doubt they chunter about it social media misinformation sites, whilst sipping on their GM Soy milk.

When the gm produced vaccine was first mooted the surveys said that many people would not have it

we are now at over 80 % usage and rising

gm food is now consumed by a higher percentage of people than have been vaccinated

Full GM products have been imported into the UK and the EU for a long time. Most people do not realise that nearly all cotton grown in the world is GM.
