When I bred gundogs, I'd make a big thing of making loud noises around pups from day one. Clatter buckets, throw down steel feed pans, slam doors, and so on. Then, later, at exercise time I'd fire a blank pistol as they are excited and being let out. Loud noises indicate that something good is going to happen. This was essential if they were to do the job they were bred for. But see below!

There is a good chance your dog picks up on your own reaction to the situation. Inevitably, we give clues a dog can detect from our body language (and possibly scent) when we anticipate a situation. We often know when a storm is coming from the weather forecast, for example! As a result, we get anxious about how the dog will react to hearing the thunder.....and the dog picks up on this....causing it, in turn, to react. So it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy! It is very difficult to control our involuntary actions but nonetheless important to try to keep positive. On the other hand, trying the layman's solution of "trying to divert his attention with treats" will probably be counter productive as you could be rewarding and reinforcing the behaviour! From what you say, your dog gets more attention when it reacts to thunder which is a reward!

I once had to take my dog over a slippery tiled floor to take it outside. The dog was very scared of the slippery surface in spite of my efforts to reassure it. Then one day I had to leave the house in an emergency. The dog stopped at the slippery surface as usual. But I hadn't time to debate the point and I just marched/dragged the dog forcibly across it. After that, we never had another scene and she'd walk across it like any other surface! They do often react to what we do, good or bad.

Thank you for taking the time. He had been very well used to noises in the past, not necessarily gun shots but certainly fireworks as we used to take him to the village display For a few years as a pup and as he grew. The initial fright of noise started a few Christmas ago when we opened some crackers and each contained a little bell for playing the bells as a table game. The bells hit the floor and gave the dog one hell of a fright and now won't be near the table if we have a meal with the whole family (in laws etc). This progressed onto not liking parcel packaging which I can pin down to the 5 year old popping the air bubbles. Now he won't come to the field when we burn said packaging Which usually would be a good chance for a run around but he is improving in this respect and now has a good run and roll whilst being inspected by the heifers as they're best buddies. Doing our best to avoid unnecessarily moving boxes etc in the house as well as letting him rip them up for play.

we actually enjoy thunder and have encouraged the little girl to enjoy it too in the hope of avoiding her being scared of thunder but perhaps the 'oohs' and 'ahh's' when we line up outside looking at the flashes and rumbles has encourage the dogs negative behaviour. The OH bought loads of adaptil potions online early the other morning whilst being frantically barked at during a thunder storm and to my surprise the collar actually worked yesterday afternoon..... the dog was so zonked out I actually took the collar off because I was concerned he was too dopey. So we shall see but it seems we have found some sort of homeopathic solution for the minute.
