NI has 61% vaxx rate , so hardly eliminated
NI has more cases, and far more deaths than ROI, despite having 30% of population of ROI.😬
At 61% vaccination rate, and that level of infection, there’s surely a chance for another mutation…

im classed as highly susceptible to covid or i was , the first month i was told to lock myself in a room and they would call to say when it was safe to come out ... i never did tho i did get a call 6 months later saying we hope you are still ok in your room you can go out for walks now.. i had a letter last week from he NHS saying basically covid isn't really that much to worry about.... make of that what you will.

It's unlikely to ever be eliminate.

The most vulnerable are vaccinated, meaning if they get infected they don't have the same chances of getting seriously ill, and the younger and less vulnerable are less likely to get seriously ill anyway, meaning numbers of those who get the disease that are likely to get seriously ill are going to get less and the number who fight the disease off should increase.

That was always the plan, Boris has made a f**k up of enough things, don't take credit away from for one of the few things he has managed to make an ok job of.

Just getting going here, big push for vaccinations, now we actually have some vaccine. The aim is 90% or higher of 12 year olds and up.
Still no cases in the South Island for almost a year but I'd say its only a matter of time.

But with the prospect of vaccinating the population before more than a handful of kiwi deaths from Covid complications?
Yes the idea was to keep it out until everyone was vaccinated, unfortunately the government couldn't be arsed to get any vaccine so we're nowhere near done. It took a couple of last minute deals with other countries to get what we have now.
I think we'll still get whacked with it because although other countries don't have 100% vaccination they do have millions of people that have had it and built some immunity along with those who have been jabbed, we're a clean slate.
I wonder if that makes us a potential breeding ground for a new variant?

Where are you plucking your numbers from for this? As far as I can see ROI has about twice as many deaths.
