Automation of Combine and collecting tractor and trailer was very good ,until Mum turned round and said ,"more put on the dole"?

It looks as though there's a stalemate between those available to work, and those who actually come through to do the work, so small, automated machines can only be a good thing until the labour market matches up with what's needed?

Was I the only one to think that a lot of this is research for the sake of research?

The producers and presenters seem to love new fancy innovative technology because it sounds positive, trendy and cutting edge, but someone somewhere has to buy the machines and make them pay.

I'd be quite excited about it if it might ever become financially viable, and if I knew it wasn't likely to get legislated out of the ball park by the clipboards in this country. Sadly any financial gains achieved will bypass the farmers.

Everyone seems to love agricultural technology.....and then blames the farmer for destroying the environment. :(

I personally applaud Country file, Harper etc for trying to publish just how diverse and tech advanced modern Agriculture is. We are desperately short of new entrants and if making it exciting and more futuristic helps to encourage a few more to put ag on their horizon, whats the problem? We are already terribly short of technicians etc... Lets get behind and push for new blood.

Does anyone know what's actually in the nutrients for the intensive hydroponic systems that were shown? What are they derived from?
Fairly generic, N P K fertiliser with extra K, Ca etc in a separate tank. Known as A + B Tanks. Constantly recirculating, monitoring EC (electrical conductivity) pH, temperature etc for adjustment. Usually drop a bit of hydrogen peroxide in there too via a peristaltic pump to knock out some of the nasties.
Expensive, but economies of scale help, supposedly.

Thanks. So it's out of a bag and probably from a fossil fuel powered process. Sometimes it's necessary to check the bits of missing information.

Yes, but you use very little, normally apply to 5-10% excess, which is collected, tweaked and sent back round. Nutrient solution is applied from the top through a small sprayer nozzle, it trickles down for collection and so on. Depending on substrate (coir, rockwool, Leca) this could be a 30 sec burst every 3-5 mins in the summer.
Twitchy in a power cut.
Conventional strawberries fairly similar, except I ran 2/3 mins every couple of hours growing in peat (oops) an latterly coir.
