DEFRA consultation on on approach to beaver reintroduction and management in England

I think we're looking at this all wrong !
Should be looking at this from a half full glass and not a half empty glass.
Every one is all doom and gloom with electricity, gas and oil prices sky high this winter.
Now If we get a cold snap, and money's too tight to pay heating bills etc, people are going to want to keep warm.
So two questions.
How fast do they breed ?
And how many Beavers to make a hat 🤔 😁

Does bullet proof glass stop a frozen beaver fired from a canon ?

Areas of Germany are ahead of us, and now their rivers are different. Beavers have burrowed into the banks (as did coypus) and the native tree species did not appreciate wet feet. They died, rendering the banks and land either side, a stinking mosquito ridden swamp.
The ‘river’ is now a series of linked pools of stagnant water, up to a mile wide.

Beaver-made flooding

Some riverside residents, however, don't have to go out looking for traces of beaver activity. Just as manmade dams can be disaster for the habitat of other animals, so some Germans have found their own homes flooded by beaver-made reservoirs.

One homeowner who found the foundations of his house in German city of Jülich threatened by rising water levels from a beaver dam told local broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk: "They don’t belong here in the middle of the city. We’re not an open-air zoo."

Nabu says conflict usually occurs when farms or gardens extend right up to the river bank or where the natural floodplain is altered.

"The beavers aren’t aware of property ownership. They see the riverbank as a place they can dig their burrow," says Barthel. "They see tasty food in fields or orchards. So it can happen that a tractor breaks a beaver lodge or a beaver fells a favorite apple tree."

She adds that beavers have been accused of burrowing into dams and dikes, disrupting manmade flood defences, but says there are well-practiced defenses against this kind of damage.

"If beavers are pilloried by politicians, it’s primarily to distract from their own failures in flood prevention," says Barthel.

So don't expect any sign of responsibility from the Environmental Groups. Personally I dearly hope to meet one of these "Enlightened" people ..

How long before whatever damage they do they will be given protective status just like the badgers!
That's exactly what's proposed......

73.We intend to make beavers a European Protected Species by listing them in Schedule 2 of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017. This change is to implement legal obligations under the Bern Convention and does not form part of the proposed approach that is being consulted upon.

Giving beavers this protection means that it will be an offence to deliberately capture, kill, disturb or injure beavers. It will also be an offence to damage or destroy breeding sites or resting places.

76.Therefore, if an individual wants to undertake management activities which would otherwise be prohibited, they will be required to apply for a licence from Natural England. We will develop guidance to help stakeholders to understand when a licence is required and how to apply for a licence.

Don't these people realise that letting beavers dam watercourses causes them to fill up and flood and that wetlands cause global warming by releasing methane in large quantities?

Beavers are a serious PITA in many parts of the USA as they block culverts, drains and watercourses with their dams and they can be difficult to remove. Absolute madness.

Yeah, I've seen beaver dams being blown up in the USA on Youtube.

Large lakes next to roads etc.

I don't know what to think TBH, won't be solved en masse by individuals targetting beavers. Now targetting those proposing the legislation and enabling prosecution ? Using our "Democratic rights" to protest ? Will require a lot of people and good organisation - so forget the NFU 😆

Responded to the questionaire.

I am in a grumpy mood tonight, so I suspect my VERY non-PC responses will be binned.

I had to take a walk outside half an hour ago because I was ballistic. Truth is I don't have it at my door at the moment and I could pass it off in that manner.

But other people do and that pain has been caused by people who will never be directly accountable. I really feel for anyone that is being targetted by these irresponsible fools - they are putting humans in direct conflict with wildlife for no good reason.

I cannot wait for 3ft of water to go through a major town due to beavers, sometimes the only way to get the message is for people or unfortunately experience their own pain and trauma

Probably be the Landowners fault.... "He didn't clean and manage the ditches"

And if he did, just look at the mad outrage at Mr Price from Kingsland in Herefordshire who got his local river moving properly!
