Bakewell last week I would of seen bunches of weaned sucklers ranging from £400 ish to £1200 ish for the same age ,granted kept on very different systems and costs but I would of thought if you are going to the effort of keeping a cow you may as well aim for the higher end of these quotes
There will be a sweet spot about 3/4 up the tree I’d have thought? 🤔 just before the “creep fed from 3 weeks old because mum is that beefy she doesn’t milk” system starts.
I see plenty of tremendous beefy heifers and 2nd calvers at sales with fantastic 3-4 week old calves at foot. With a bag the size of a double fist? People go mad for them but I prefer the cow too feed the calf for the first 6 months! Without my help… 😉☺️

I reckon 3/4 the way up is probably about right, what I dont get is a suckler calf being no better than a good BBX/dairy
We fetched three in that were close to calving the other day mainly because the weather was bad but also because one of them (bbx lim second calver) looked ‘dangerous’
3/4 lim bought as a bulling heifer calved itself cost £1600
1st cross dairy bought as a second calver with 6 month calf at foot had a pull but just because MooCall went off would have calved itself cost £1000
Bbx lim was too fat ‘as usual’ grown calf too overcooked ‘as usual’ was stuck calf was twisted to the side. Managed to turn it and got it out just. Cost £2200 with a smart calf.
Lim x has a real good calf, dairy x has a good calf bbx has the best calf by far for growth and shape. All to a good bull which is half of it. All ok in their own way. Wouldn’t want them all bbx though would need a better psychiatrist

The older i get the less BBx ‘s I have there is just too much work in them compared to the rest.

I dont want to or dont wish to keep suckler cows but as somebody buying there progeny I do see a vast difference in prices for weaned calves and would of thought the top end do leave more money behind even with bigger risk and bigger costs
Your probably right ! But not for me, I know the man who bought them and he has the right farm etc for that type of outfit , I don’t do they not for me .
