Some clearly do. Agronomist called by yesterday and one of his clients has 30ac worth of Graham grown for seed in store and now contracted to be over wintered.... meanwhile one of his other clients is trying to buy seed from the merchant who owns the Graham but they claim to only have 2 varieties of seed available, neither being Graham.... when the agronomist heard which 2 varieties the advice was cancel the order be far better off fallow than growing either of them!Stupid question but why dont seed companies use the previous seasons crop for a lot of it ? They could start processing in may or june, I accept they would have to cover the cost of storage but that wouldnt be huge compared to the benefit of a longer working season. While some dont decide on what varieties to grow till they cut this years crop a lot could be processed early.
I grow for one company that does exactly this. They have a client base in Scotland that requires timely supply of seed so carry large stocks of over yeared seed. Obviously a big chunk of cash tied up in carrying this inventory though.Stupid question but why dont seed companies use the previous seasons crop for a lot of it ?
