Fertiliser Price Tracker

2008 fertilizer prices, an interesting read. https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/879968

Could have been written yesterday.
But the financial collapse of 2008 was all part of the drop in prices

"The price of urea, the world's most common nitrogen fertilizer, rose from about $280 to $405 per ton in 2007 and reached $452 in April 2008. The price then soared to $815 per ton in August—but plunged to $247, lower than before the price spiral began, in mid-December."

Should I buy at that price ?

200 dairy cows and followers to feed next year, at a cow to the acre, no fertilizer bought.

Can I afford not to buy enough to at least start the season?
How long since reseeds? Clover content of sward? How efficient has your grazing been in your system? Could you reduce cow numbers?

Basically can you tweak what you've been doing to get the same out but for less in?

I was used liquid in 2007 then booked in the autumn
cancelled the order in the spring and used 33.5 n
they had always said they would reprice if it fell but would not come down enough we’re not very happy
but tough

this year on high priced urea but now planning on much lower rates
If I want to buy grain there are easier ways than paying uneconomic imput costs

They are not really going up much compared to current crop in the shed.
New crop nov futures 193 tonight
£30 gap between new crop and old crop

there is a lot of time between now and next harvest most of next harvest in world terms is not planted
fertiliser rates will be lower so a record yield is very low on the -probability scales but not impossible if weather is exceptional

If I had wheat planted i would be selling half the yield, more downside than upside i feel.

Agronomist out yesterday walking winter barley. He’s seemed fairly confident price will fall a good bit as long as people don’t all panic buy and firm the price. Don’t think they’re shifting much at the minute
