I've never grown maize before but I'm planned on putting in 60/70 acres next year.

South Devon coast, relatively light ground but not sandy, a bit exposed. Any suggestions as to varieties to grow or what group I should be growing.

What's made you want to try some

It's a great feed alongside grazed grass, I don't think any other forage compliments grass like maize.

I've been buying some in for the last couple of years but it is going to be prohibitively expensive next year. Its low N requirement is very appealing and I'm hoping to largely feed it with FYM and biosolids.

I have a largely stale herd so I'm not doing many litres at the moment but I can't complain about my current solids feeding maize as the only conserved forage.

Nothing later than a 10 if you get the weather coming in like around here.

Provided it isn't high up you will probably get a variety that is a 10 for maturity off in September.

Is this bird damage to top of the cobs. Think we will go on next dry spell, have chosen dry feilds with several gate exit points so hopefully won't be to bad!
