Insurance quote shock

I am looking at buying a diesel focus as a run around for £1000.. the reason why it's so expensive is the owner had to spend a lot to pass mot ,new brakes and tyres
But that's not what I want to say really.... I was very shocked to receive an insurance quote for nearly 3/4 cost of car

My van insurance went down when i added my wife to it! She's never even sat in the van and never will :ROFLMAO: :X3: 🤷‍♂️

The value of the car has very little to do with the premium. Risks are what governs the price. That includes employment, age of driver or drivers, clean license or not, the insurance class and what they assess to be third party risks [because the old banger might prang a new Range Rover] and location. Plus, if it isn't taking on the insurance of an existing vehicle, there will be no no-claims discount. Which means that if it is taking over from a car that has lost part or all of its no-claims discount, that will also increase the premium.
Young drivers and those that have lost their license in the last few years are considered to be especially high risk.

I'm currently making a claim due to a car at Screwfix reversing into my Honda's side while I was in the shop. Luckily there were two police officers standing right next to it as it happened [on unrelated business. One of them was just calling in to see his brother in law who is an employee], who saw it all. The driver had no option but to admit fault. Even so I've wasted three hours so far, making maps and so on.

The value of the car does affect the quote. If it's very low value,an accident is far more likely to end up in a write off which costs more than the repair.

Cowabunga is right when he lists the various points that affect insurance premiums. Most vehicle insurers give automatic cover up to perhaps £50k on vehicles (think NFU is £75k) without the value affecting the price. Some insurers give an age of vehicle discount as vehicle gets older and hence value goes down. Different Insurers though have different models as to how they price risks and the differences in pricing can be huge. With farm related cars and vans always ensure that you have business use and get cover for trailers being towed behind the car/van. Be very careful to also ensure any non farming business use is covered, i.e car used by wife in connection with another business or diversification.

Alot of things affect insurance, but sometimes you can get a quote for one price then 2 minutes later get another quote for alot cheaper.

When I was 17 I refused to pay a stupid price for insurance so just kept getting the bus to college. I used to use the confused quick quote app on the way home and just keep putting my brothers reg in over and over, for some reason I would get a really cheap quote out of the blue.

Ended up getting insured on a 1.2 clio at 17 for £950, the same company quoted me £4800 for the same car just the previous month, 4 month later changed my car to a imported 1.8 mx5, the cost to swap the insurance was just £33. So I was 17 year old insured on a 1.8 car for less than a grand.

I'm still with the same company now because no one can ever get anywhere near the renewal prices.

The golden rule with any of these on line sites (and for that matter any insurance) is to always make sure you tell the truth 100% when filling in your details. Small details can make huge differences to premiums, in the event of a major claim the Insurer will check that all the questions have been answered correctly. Also be very careful about minor modifications to vehicles and ensure you disclose them to Insurers i.e fitting of non standard set of alloy wheels etc

The little one has a penchant for 2 seat sports cars and has been paying around 500 for the privilege.
This month he has changed over to his third in succession. He rang the insurance, a nationwide name, expecting to make a straightforward transfer, and was quoted 2.2k. He said, no thanks, looked round and got cover for 400 from another nationwide name.
