Owen Paterson

They have been private for over 30 years. Over that time they have paid billions in dividends yet investment is lamentable. A private monopoly that isn’t working or accountable. Do you think the crooked political system should allow this situation to continue for another 30 years? No wonder Paterson feels hard done by, his misdeeds are small change compared to that swindle.

I'm certainly not defending them but perhaps the infrastructure problem is because of the poor investment when publically owned as much as now, the regulator should be harder on them
Says it all:-
"Scottish Water, which is publicly owned, has invested nearly 35% more per household in infrastructure since 2002 than the privatised English water companies, according to the analysis. It charges users 14% less and does not pay dividends". The Guardian.
That is meaningless, it could be because of a large number of reasons, one of which is population numbers, business numbers etc, as I said I'm not defending them but stats can be used to prove anything
It should be recognised that the government is complicit in this by building millions of extra houses that sewage works cannot cope with, these mainly Tory governments seem to believe they can stuff this island with ever more people & houses with no effect at all on the utilities that have to cope with it all.
People need houses

They certainly do & the more people you have in the country the more houses you need, it is not always easy for utilities such as sewage plants to expand adequately to cope with the extra sewage & water, no thought seems to be given to these things, we are told the world is getting warmer but when was any additional reservoirs planned or built, if we have a dry time water shortages will surely follow.

New resevoir planned in South Lincs to serve the Anglian region. And allow water into London we locals presume.

I'm not sure why anyone believes anything, governments, politicians or companies say it's all rubbish, spin and make believe
One has to look at what they do. In the original privatisation of utilities the return on capital was embedded in the regulatory framework creating private monopolies that couldn’t lose. Today Risky Sunak makes all kinds of spin laden statements about the need for this or the need for that. What has he actually done? Raised national insurance and cut tax on banks. Over the years the behind the spin the capitalist approach remains the same, workers pay capital is protected.

Not sure how much is down to Sunak, seems to me Bozo announces or there's a press release of new money for this & that at the spur of the moment when he wants a positive headline!

Our water charges reflect two parts and fresh water provision and sewage removal.
Scotland has a huge amount of clean water available due to low population and large hilly land area.
They are little affected as they can discharge the storm water direct in to the se from their main population centres. Where as in much of the uk regulation has allowed much of the storm water into the sewage system which today is a crazy thing to do.
Further fresh water provision is hampered by low rainfall in England meaning most water has to be pumped from deep bore and often sent hundreds of miles.

Another little piggy with his snout in the trough. @bobk is he your MP?

I didn't like Owen Paterson until he highlighted the false campaign against GM foods in "The Guardian".

Quite apt you are posting that rag - nothing good to be said about anything printed in that cesspit - about time it died.

I don't know exactly what he has done - but I thank him very much for standing up against the lies and propaganda coming out of that cesspit.

Apparently the [alleged] bung was for £12k. Bit of a risk for millionaire businessman, every little helps I suppose...

Wasn’t there also a £100k year from a company that happened to sponsor the grand national at Aintree for 5 years
It appears there was £100k a year from Randox and £50k a year from a NI meat processor. He repeatedly approached ministers asking questions on behalf of them both without declaring that he was on their payroll.
He was sacked as a minister in 2015 for being useless, and it appears he made up for the loss in salary by taking on these consultancies. His wife was drawn into the web when Randox sponsored the Grand National held at Aintree where she was in charge.
