yes it’s the green star
but that run is tramline right to gate
smile every time you pass it

Of course it's nice to see good workmanship, especially when you did it yourself. Is it your own farm or do you have a house as part of your salary?

Edit: Or are you a farm worker who gets a horn about machinery work?

Very interesting!
There’s only me here now plus the wife, on about half your acreage.
Wives play an enormous part in keeping it fun and happy. Especially when they are a good cook too!
I’m extremely lucky to have an old friend, himself a former manager about 10 year my senior, to help during Harvest.
So it’s two old buggers having a hell of a laugh. (Ironically, the guy that walked out on me, used to work for him!)
But I had to promise his wife that we stop for a cup of tea every day. Well, the tea and biscuits/cake happens, but not always the stopping!
Nonetheless a hell of a lot of fun and laughs are had.

Meant no offence pal 👍
Right so you're running the show, what's your idea of a decent salary?

My current old doll bitches and moans about cooking the dinner never mind making my lunch 🤣
She's handy enough at the paperwork though!

The salaried option would be met with a big F.O by most workers , hourly rate payment is fine so long as a contract is agreed on what those hours are likely to be and also overtime rates need to be bought into line , profit share is good in theory but profits are often lost by a good accountant to avoid a tax bill , if a farm is a limited company shares could be offered but I cant see many farmers liking that idea , most would be happy with £x ph and an overtime rate of x1.3 to x1.5 and agreed minimum hours per week and an agreement on unsociable hours .

As an employee, what is the benefit of being given shares in a Ltd Company ?

They will grow in value if the farm does well so you are likely to care more about how things go and put more effort in ,you may even get to draw a dividend, if you want you can sell the shares back to the farmer or who ever you want when you leave / retire, it can be a win win for both employer and employee.

How will they grow in value ? As a farm is a restricted Ltd Company (not a stock traded share) the only time they have any value is if the farm is sold, and the shareholding distributed.

In addition, a share-holding has associated costs, which then means they become a cost as opposed to a benefit.

To be paid a divi, you must be a Director, an insignificant number of shares would not qualify for this.

Unless the farm was owned by a large PLC, why would a family owned business give away shares to an employee ?

A profit share, is money in your pocket.

You can issue share in any limited Co, if you own 0.5% of a £2m farm then thats what you own , if the farm does well and pays a £50k dividend then you get 0.5% of that and you still own your share in the farm , I have small limited companies and can issue shares as I want , a profit share can be worthless as most of the time the company doesnt want a big tax bill so writes off as much as possible.

As dividends are paid out of profit AFTER costs, what's the difference to profit sharing ?

Really? Not sure that’s correct.

Dividends have tax benefits generally, dividends and profit share are similar in so far as they can only come from....profit , no profit no pay out.
Give staff one “B” share and you can use that a vehicle to pay annual bonus without NI, minimal tax etc. But a company can still pay divi when there’s no profit, so no worries there.
