What happened that bad year was hoggs in general were a bad trade so folks kept a lot back and thought weight would cure the job resulting in a general higher percentage of heavy hoggs coming forward
I remember a lot being sold on from finishers to other finishers sold by the wagon load per kilo
Not long after they lifted a fair bit

How late? I don’t sell any hoggs until April, and there was certainly still a £100 ceiling all through April.

They should all be sold by Christmas anyway, or it just holds the Spring lamb price down…..😂

Do you not think heavy hoggs might be overdone by all these folks jumping on the bandwagon expecting a repeat of last year?

3 years ago, heavy hoggs were on fire, mostly due to short numbers. The following year, every man and his dog kept hoggs back, the job was overdone, especially the heavyweights. The result was a ceiling price of about £100/had, regardless of weight, for everything apart from the very best. Those bigger stores bought would have left a very big hole I suspect.
Not now in the run up to Xmas if the turkey shortage is to be believed then the red meat sector should see a slight lift,

I agree though that the teg job could be over cooked in March with a lot of folks thinking it could be a flyer when In actual fact the large number of Tegs that have been bought put out to graze out in preparation for it will dampen the trade

Not this again!!!
I think it was well through April when they lifted
I remember some dealers and finishers dumping out of hoggs that were almost done getting a bit upset as they sold them early and panicked a bit

Yes, I’d sooner be looking at a field full of lambs currently, than a field full of turkeys.🤐

I’m doing my bit, keeping fewer hoggs back and keep on selling them finished steadily while prices are were they are. A lift before December would make it better still.👍

I started my ‘smalls’ (everything <36kg) on turnips yesterday. That group of 130 didn’t look many.
Grass all but disappearing now, so hopper went out to start another mob nibbling. Most are 40kg+ and fit already, so won’t eat much before they’re gone, but will keep them trickling on as the weather turns.

They’ve been going live for a couple of weeks. Email came yesterday suspending me from my Tesco contract.🤐

Yes, very true. But I was meaning the lambs that will finish at 42kg in spring against the rabbits that will be 35-37kg. I’ve never understood the “buy big stores abd leave them until they are 55kg” theory.

By heck there’s gunna be some hoggs about this March and April. I have never seen as many random people with a field full of stores
I reckon February will be the glut month. That’s when everyone starts too panic that these hoggs have too go or we will have no grass come spring. With Hogg finisher heading for £300/t+ those that aren’t dedicated too the game will be outing them then.

Usual case where they say they don’t want them and then they go up a lump
