I started my ‘smalls’ (everything <36kg) on turnips yesterday. That group of 130 didn’t look many.
Grass all but disappearing now, so hopper went out to start another mob nibbling. Most are 40kg+ and fit already, so won’t eat much before they’re gone, but will keep them trickling on as the weather turns.

They’ve been going live for a couple of weeks. Email came yesterday suspending me from my Tesco contract.🤐
But ,but aren't Tesco great and all conquering ? 🤷‍♂️

Not selling them too quickly, need to get the good of all that expensive rappa fencing gear first.
I usually buy 6 fence systems in October and the Rappa pens are due of a change this year, but I’ve decided that I will hold off of a couple of years until the arable farms have decided that there tractor driver aren't to keen on sorting lame lambs on a turnip field in February 😂

No, they are a ruthless, sharply run retail company, just the same as all the others are. However, they did offer a contract that gave a good premium and the security of knowing the price up to 12 months in advance.
They have made a mistake this year though, and having to buy lambs outside the scheme I suspect.

I know what you mean, my small bank account is always ready before the lambs get heavy 🙈

They’re no fools, that’s a certain fact. Got too admire the way they make money, even if we don’t agree with the morals of it at times

We are one of those random people! Bought around 700 store lambs. Number dropping though as keep dying.

It’s not as easy as everyone thinks bad enough keeping your own that you know but buying in brings a lot of bugs together.

Once you get them past Xmas they will live.

Just been talking too one of my bigger wintering farms. They are letting me on another 50 acre I don’t normally have and will have more turnips than expected for us come new year. I asked “everyone else is cutting sheep back too conserve grass due too fert price. What’s your take?”
He said “over wintered grass isn’t worth a 💩. If I let you put more sheep on, that adds up too more money, the more money helps buy the fert I need for spring. But he was also saying they are looking at a slurry injector instead of splash plate then they can utilise it better on silage ground. Milking 500 Holstein fresian cows plus followers so no shortage of muck

I asked this question a week or so back.
Anyway had my feed rep in yesterday and he said he's got several farms not wanting sheep this year cos of fertiliser prices and availability...... So yeah I dunno, guess theres bound to be a few thinking that tho makes a bit of sense.

Also if you are finding people wanting less sheep or wont them gone quicker, shouldn't that keep stores price back a little?

All well and good saying “I don’t want sheep over winter I can’t afford fert in the spring”… but what will they do in the spring when all there grass is yellow and frost bitten and full of disease and grows f**k all too…. Wintering sheep is a tool too grow grass just as fert is it’s not a hindrance like some farmers seem too think…

2 men want the same amount but gone by 1st January, they’re already stocked up
3 men want a lot more but be gone mid Jan opposed too end of Feb
2 want more sheep full stop and have made ground available too match numbers.
1 man doesn’t want sheep at all. But he’s a PITA on a good year so not going too miss him.
2 men want a few less but same time scale.
The others say just carry on as normal, It be rite.
🤷🏻‍♂️ So I don’t know what’s best.
