Stupid question, but bear with me I'm not very bright.

Put flotation wheels on drill tractor with Milwaukee 1/2" drive impact wrench a few weeks ago.

Went to take them off on monday. Needed a 4ft length of old PTO tube on end of 3/4" inch socket to budge them. Needed all of 100kg bouncing on end of bar to get them started. Impact wrench wouldn't budge them.

Only on one side though! Other side came off perfectly with impact gun. Every bolt.

Any ideas why one side had tightened so much themselves?

I put them on and tightened them up with same gun.
Has the tractor got left and right hand threads or are both axles the same thread

you know on some very old trailer wheels, some wheel nuts were right hand thread, so they would tighten themselves up while driving, maybe the same happened there with one side being tightened up, and the other loosened while driving, doesn't sound very probable to me, but you never know, could be the reason.

As far as I'm aware there the same. The flotations go on and off it every spring and autumn for drilling
Only thing I can think of is with forward momentum ,small amount of vibration is causing one side to lock on tighter whilst the other one is doing the opposite ,,,or you forgot to put a drop of grease on one side

Rust in the dish (cup) which the wheel nut sits in? Would affect one wheel without necessarily the other.

Could be. I don't normally put grease or anything to lubricate them on bolts.
I had this after driving the Ser IIA LR across the Sahara in 1971. Got the dishes in the spare rusty on the way down. When I went to change from the spare back to the repaired tyre in Senegal, the only way I could get the nuts undone was to put the end of the bar on the tarmac and jerk the clutch in reverse. Dug quite a hole in the tarmac before the nut came loose.

That's just what I was about to suggest, RH thread on the right side and LH thread on the left. If all right handed it's nearly always a near side wheel that will come slack
