Long haul was defined as 5000 miles so you can still fly London to New York “short haul”. He’s a cracker isn’t he.

Risky put the APD rates up almost as much for people flying between 2000 and 5500 miles too:

"From April 2023, the international distance bands will be set at 0-2,000 miles, 2,000-5,500 miles and 5,500 miles-plus, and the applicable APD rates will be £13, £87 and £91 respectively for economy passengers."

Thanks, picked that up wrong.

I did like the opening labor response.

Hypocrisy at the highest level. The President is thinking about his carbon footprint. His entourage for Rome then Glasgow has flown in 80 vehicles I doubt there will be a leccy car amongst them.

Just the opposite is happening in France and some other EU countries, all domestic flights under 2.5 hours are banned if the equivalent train/TGV journey is available..
You think Rishi's maybe dropped a bollock on this one?

You may be right.

You've got to applaud him for the comedy value though, perfect timing for COP26. It'll have them rolling in the aisles. "Oh Rishi, you crack us up, now tell all us delegates what you REALLY taxed in the budget"..........

Do we have any domestic flights in the U.K. where the train would be viable and sensible as an alternative? I can’t think of any. Other than perhaps LHR-MAN.

I do see Air France flying Paris to Nice, Marseille, Toulouse, Lyon, Bordeau, Florence, Clement, and Brest though - all of whom I’m fairly sure have train stations.

Listening to a climate scientist today saying that Co2 produced from flying isn't in fact the worst the worst part. Apparently, the high altitude dispersal of exhaust particles and con trails are a far bigger problem to the climate. Also as an aside, if the global cement industry was a country it would be the 3rd biggest emitter of Co2 in the world. :(
