New batteries are all I will use. Pick your size depending on fencer output and how often you want to be recharging it.

I go to my local scrap merchant with a few kilos of scrap metal and a multimeter. weigh in the scrap and go to the battery bin and look for a battery with more than 12.8 volts, then do a deal with the boss, take home a battery or 2 usually no money changes hands. Some of the scrap batteries will last for months and 1 or 2 have ended up on the farm truck. when they fail take em back and repeat process. zero cost and keeps the place tidy. Happy days......

This. A decent scrappy will drop test the batteries for you or you can buy a cheapie and do it yourself.

most fencers are actually 9-12v even if the proper battery would be a 9v one.

So - do you really wanting to be saving money on the only thing that is keeping your livestock from getting out ? 🤦‍♂️

how much does a new ( preferably a large capacity “deep cycle” battery designed for continual discharging & recharging, NOT a standard car battery ) battery cost compared to your sheep / cattle running down a road or through the village ? 🤷‍♂️

Err, I have never seen a 9 volt fencer, apart from ones that hold torch batteries that are designed for very temporary & short distance use

if you want your fence to be putting out the best zap it can, then you need to be putting the full amount into it to start with

The ones I buy are generally between £70 & £90, and usually last 5-6 years on fencer duty, before being chopped in for £10-15 when I have a load to go to the scrappy.

I keep enough for each fencer, plus at least one spare, then one is always being charged so that I can replace them all on a fortnightly cycle.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't consider that's a big cost to my business, when I rely on 2 strands of polywire to keep all my stock where I want them all winter.

That would depend if they’re going to get nicked. Gets painful at £70 plus every time.

Bought 12 last year, all 110-120 AH,
Was fed up chasing 27 scrappy batteries around I get from the garage after 9 died in 2 days I went and bought 12 new, ended up paying £55 for 110’s and £60 for 120’s. Fencers now go weeks without changing and the scrappy battery goes with it as a spare.
