Dead horse in stable/ Rat in wall floor space

Bit of a spin off from the famous dead horse in stable thread.
we have some sort of vermin in the house floor and wall space that is active at night suspect it may be a rat. It is contained in that area at the moment but sounds like it’s trying to scrape/ chew it’s way out newish house 10 years old no access in at all at ground level been round the whole house many times. Been in attic no signs in there, how can the bugger access the cavity wall and how can I catch and kill the bloody thing ideally don’t want to put any poison down as don’t want him to die in the house!!

If you don’t want to use poison then you’ll need to get a few terriers and rip the floorboards up with crowbar, or you could go full on Texas Chainsaw Massacre of course.

Personally, I think the earache from a dead rat smell for a few days, would be less than that from destroying the house.

Nearly cut a hole in the first floor ceiling last night to put a fen trap in with it moving around last night, where would you put the poison if it is in the house permanently not coming in and out

Rather it was mice than rat hate the bloody dirty things sounds quite big when scraping at the floor that’s why I thought rat but no idea what it is at moment

Where there’s one there another. get that rat gone before it drops a bunch more or you’ll be the one moving out of the house.

What ever it is, it needs food source,,
Mine was mice, in garage below our bedroom, had chickens at the time, they managed to get in wheat bag, and moved approx 10 kg into the ceiling void, I found this out when I cut open the ceiling,

Don’t know about rats, but mice can live of the condensation from pipes.

Another thought was would these thermal image scopes used for shooting pick up heat source through ceiling from it or would the whole house create to much of a glow
