Freelander Question

I have just purchased a 04 td Freelander which has a defunct clutch master cylinder and wondering if anyone has retro fitted a better one than the daft plastic one it has. I have a new one here now but find it a weird idea on something like a clutch cylinder to be made of plastic and not been able to top it up or bleed.I have watched a video how to change one and dont like the flimsy snap on fitting on the pedal much either .Can a metal one be fitted instead or are they robust enough .The rest of the car is fine otherwise :)

We had 5 of them, just wait for the turbo to go before the clutch. Amazingly the rest of the vehicles were fairly reliable, but the BMW bits were cr@p. They were made in the Ford Granada factory up North somewhere.

If you've just purchased it then chances are it is a dud slave cylinder not master cylinder. As the master cylinder fix is relatively cheap and easy to do, so not really a reason to sell a car. Slave cylinder replacement is a fairly big task as it's inside the bell housing.

Are you sure that it's a hydraulic problem.i bought one with a non working clutch but after checking it out I found the pedal box under the dash was flexing as the welds had cracked.swapped it for one off a breaker I had and it worked perfect.

My boy has a Freelander, an earlier petrol, bought for peanuts as no-one else wants them. Does a bit of maintenance and he's more than happy, it does get used well and apart from him not being 21 yet it's only the insurance that costs him any real money.
He's become somewhat an expert on things Freelander and was going on the other day that there is a recommended modification of putting a proper master and slave that is bleedable. I suppose it's just down to the length of the stroke on the slave that dictates what you use, some have used a Defender master and slave so evidently it can be done.

Cheers chaps . I only paid scrap money for it so i dont mind doing a bit on it .A old couple bought it about 6 weeks ago off Facebook and got ripped off big time on it and just wanted some money back .They were towing a caravan when the clutch went and got recovered .The pedal has no resistance at all and stays down .I will fit the new one to see what happens. I will look into a way of fitting a proper one if this cures it as the rest of the motor is ok .
thanks :)

Just a tip when you pick up the master cylinder, it's a terribly crap design BTW. But don't open the top cap for the reservoir. It's supposed to be a sealed system and already comes filled with clutch fluid.
