Used a fair amount over the years here of paper crumble. Putting on 20t/acre of it only on ground that’s really low on lime. First year it does take nitrogen away from the crop to break it down but after that it’s a better crop on the whole. Got stuck in a wet hole with a nearly full spreader so had to empty the load to get out. The following year when it was ploughed up the area that I’d emptied out onto was full of worms so much so you could nearly pick a handful of them up at a time.
Its not all bad stuff just to use it where it’s justified.

There’s no ideal way for us to do it. Our neighbour helps us with jobs and required straw for his animals do we supply him and get machines and labour or hay back in return so just looking for alternatives to put back on the land.

Far better selling the straw and applying sewage and paper. Rothamsted did some research. Chopping straw for 15 years made hardly any difference in % of organic matter. Couple of year of adding manure made a lot bigger difference.
selling straw in the swath if they bale it £50/ ton (£100/ac)

spreading 10t/ac sewage foc £2.50/ton to spread £25/ac
paper 10/ac payment of £3/ton £2.50/t to spread plus £5/ac

just have to keep an eye on compaction.
