Yes . But if you had a quarter tank of fuel in your car you would try and do 100 miles would you . Thought the program last night was rubbish why would you race around a field eating chilies nothing to do with motoring makes them look like practice in my book.

Last nights Top Gear confirmed my belief that at the moment electric cars are useless .

rather an “odd” test !

i’m still finding mine very useful and very cheap to own. / run

only valid downside is capital cost of these things vs ice …….. but capital is cheap

seems to be a lot of different opinions on the 20/80 thing, I would love to see some real science around that

we only charge to 80% most days as its plenty for regular daily use, rarely see it below 20% you can only do that practically if you home charge however, wouldn’t be possible using public networks

i have seen no loss of battery performance yet in 20,000 miles though, charged daily

If, say, it causes a 5% battery capacity loss over 5 years it'd be no problem.....

I'd be looking towards something like the Enyaq iV with the large battery, 300 mile + range, anyway so losing 5% wouldn't be a big deal.

Different battery chemistries work differently. I think the LFP cells in Made in China Teslas are happier at higher state of charge than those from the States, but the cells have lower capacity.
Different manufacturers have different policies on how much battery capacity the users have access to. Many have a big top and bottom buffer to stop over and under charging problems, but this reduces the usable capacity of the pack. Tesla have been treating their customers as adults, and allowing them to manage a big part of the top buffer, suggesting it is only used occasionally.

Mine is probably charged to 100% two or three times a week, and is fairly regularly run down to below 20%

So far no issue on 21k miles.

First service tomorrow, alongside a software update which is supposed to improve the battery management, and improve range by 10%.

The new Fisker Ocean unveiled at the LA show looks a seriously interesting machine. I'm not a fan of anything remotely SUV but this looks the business. Not an ugly mofo either. Mid priced, good range and rapid. Ticking a lot of boxes for me. Presumably still heavy but that's just a thing at this stage of battery tech sadly.

What IS it with all this "vegan interior" stuff?

It's just plastic!

In the USA there are 1.3 million elec vehicles on the road out of a total of 286 million vehicles all together.

Until the USA get on board then what’s the point? Mining colbolt for batteries is just shifting the environmental problem sideways and some argue actually makes things worse.

The purchase price doesn’t make them cheap to own. Car dealer friend of mine has actively stopped pushing elec because it’s costing him due to arguing between the car manufacturer and battery manufacturer. He literally can’t afford to sell them at the moment and is stuck in the middle of some very big problems.
