A bit of a beef with Bennet Memorial, Tunbridge Wells.

A daughter, who teaches at Bennet, tells me that the headmaster and cook have taken beef off of the menu, as they consider that they produce enough meals daily to "make a difference".
It seems incredible to me that these people can make such sweeping changes, based on nothing but media here say and and a wish to find cause and blame.
Just putting it out there.

You have to question the suitability of some of these people to be in positions of education if they're not capable of understanding the basic scientific principals of a subject - just how much of the general corriculum are they misinterpreting too??

I'd just bombard the school/head with a load of bite sized propaganda (much of which is available on TFF) about the carbon cycle, etc and then ask them to have a meeting to 'disscuss' the decision.
Edit... as your daughter is on the inside, she may be in a good position to raise the arguement.

I don’t think understanding of science comes into it, it’s nearing indoctrination of the next generation to misguided environmentalism and careers in activism.

Our school age boy comes back with all the guff about meat, fossil fuels, so I’ve been loading him up with questions when he’s at home. Like:
“why is the staff car park so full?”,

“but if there’s a connecting bus service, why don’t you just get on that?”

“Where does palm oil come from?”

“why are the lights left on when no ones at school?”

I'd be asking the head to justify his position when faced with the facts about carbon emissions from beef and fossil fuels.

Your daughter is in an ideal position to challenge him but I appreciate she may be a more junior member of staff and wouldn't want to 'make too many waves'.

Yes. I have advised her to suggest they source locally produced grass fed and educate the whys and benefits of thus and also educate the carbon cycle against the use of mined carbon, with possible input from the supplier.
It really is a high achieving school and this "knee jerk" decision seems to be right out of character.

Would this policy have to pass the board of Governors? It may be worth lobbying them as well.

Maybe the Head sees it as a quick way of saving a few bob, concentrating of cheaper or low quality alternatives. Could also be getting hassle from vegan parents as well.

Point of principle then, vegans are free to eat what they want, why is this to be denied to omnivores?

Considering veganism is detrimental to children's physical and mental development I can't see how they can possibly continue with this. It would be criminal in other countries.

Was there much beef on the menu before it was 'taken off'? things may have changed since I was at school in the 90s but I honestly cant remember much beef on the menu in those days. Turkey twizzlers/pizza/sausage roll chips and beans was about the standard back then.

My gut feeling is that this is about money, beef being a whole lot more expensive than other animal proteins. The whole "we iz doing it to fight climate change" thing is just a useful excuse for them.
