Has anyone had this done? A rear foot in this case and outside half.
Vet says they do about 4 per yea 🤷‍♂️
she will need knocking out every 3 days to change the dressing for over a month. The bill will be exciting 🤔
Favorite old cow so we wouldn’t be doing it otherwise... current calf 9 months old and not in calf🙄.
Just as well this is t a business 😂

It was a bit of a retrospective post as the op was yesterday,
The vet is optimistic and they do 4 per year🤷‍♂️. Yes, old cows go downhill fast anyway. I’m interested to see how it turns out, kind of twisted though, the op done the same day as a dozen perfectly healthy young animals leave the farm to have their throats cut🥴. Just proves it pays “to be nice”. For us, only working with pure limousines, a “pet” cow is actually a pretty useful tool and a role this particular animal has carried out for the last eight years👍

She'll be fine, seen a few done, outside back clay works best if you have to do it to any.

Had a front clee taken off here , looked raw for a long time 6-8weeks and the cow was lame for most of those 6-8weeks but is perfect now. I dont think i would like to do it with a cow inside on muck though and i couldnt cull her because she was too far incalf. Costly job with 3 visits.

She has her own quite large area on fresh bedding - rest of cows are still out at the moment. Wife is dung picking to keep it clean

Never heard of them knocking the cow out to change the dressing, usually just a foot trimming crush job which the farmer does themselves, even the op was just a local anaesthetic job, admittedly a strong one, wound dressed for 10-14 days at a guess, certainly not a month, not much use now but think would rather cull the poor old girl than watch her get knocked out 10 times in a month.

Done it successfully here. Went on to have many more calves without any issues. Never knocked them out though - even through amputation. Just lifted the leg in the crush and used local and then just lifted the leg for dressing it too
Same has been done here before, cut off with horn wire , and wrapped a few times, never look behind them.
Basically just the same as wearing shoe on that hoof

Had one done years ago on dairy cows worked out ok ,when time came to cull her set of to market stoped a mile from destination had a look in she had scuffed the removed claw area blood on trailer floor turned round and went home the inspector lot at auction would have loved that . Another chap did not stop and look in same situation cost more than cow made.

About 10 years ago I had a pure Lim heifer with a horrendous abscess in a hind foot. Vet burst it and she got antibiotics but it was a huge wound. Luckily, she was very quiet and I changed the dressing every day with her in the crush, no problem.

I would highly recommend using manuka honey on the dressing - it has great healing properties.

I sloshed manuka honey on the wound, then a low adherent dressing, then wrapped it with vet wrap.
The difference between the 2 photos is one week, after which I changed the dressing every couple of days, then every 3 days. It healed from the outside in over about 3 weeks. She made a full recovery.

Saw one done 20 odd years ago when we still had cattle, lot of dressing changes, was in the sick bay for months but recovered well enough. Must’ve been money in them back in the day…..

did it once 30 years ago, with a dairy cow. operation was pretty simple and the vet changed the dressing a couple of times, no knocking out involved. but the whole thing of looking after it and keeping it separate from the other cows for a month was a right pia. never considered dong it again
