If someone isn't charged with manslaughter for that then something has gone v wrong. Why didn't anyone in the trailer speak up either? That looks v much like it was an accident waiting to happen, if the pics tell the true story. So many people pay lip service to H&S. I don't understand why it is considered jobsworth/uncool to keep people safe. I couldn't live with myself if I was in charge of that operation/there on the day and didn't say anything. More people should speak up when they see unsafe practices.

Complacency I expect. They've probably been steadily trundling over that bridge regularly for the last 20 years and never been a problem before.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing though, allowing everyone to say how silly it was.

Their would be getting on for 2 ton of Men, Polaris, Trailer etc. I bet they've been over a thousand times, then once you overstep the mark, a tragedy.

Customers then? If I was paying anything like the quoted rates I wouldn’t be sharing a lambing trailer with ten others guys and guns.

Tragic for all involved. I expect that it had been fine before, but someone will be hung out to dry now. 
I have been over some seriously dodgy bridges with horses, but the usual practice is to dismount before the bridge, so that it's every man for himself in the event of a calamity!

As it was a Ranger, it is unlikely there were 10 in the trailer.

One report is quoted as eleven on the trailer, others eleven in total. Not that it matters now, but either is stupidly overloaded.

Well I struggle to believe that anyone has never taken a risk of some sort in their lives .
We all want to get back home at night ... I suppose it depends how you define the word 'risk'

I love these threads full of hindsight and assumptions
I have done some stupid things and survived, but they could have gone wrong in hindsight. I hope that l have remembered them all so I don't repeat them.
And if that is what happened then the employer should have the book thrown at them so they never put an employee in that position again.

Can't be many shooters and beaters on here who have not travelled in some extremely dodgy beat trailers. many converted out of old caravans pulled by a tractor with probably 100 times more pulling power than they were designed for, across tracks where the chassis is bottoming out regularly. I am amazed there are not more accidents.

Most people in that situation don’t stop and assess everything around them. I bet the 11 people were busy having a good chat and a laugh and barely gave the bridge a second thought. It’s very rare in that situation for anyone to say hang on a minute f**k this I’m getting off.
Very sad indeed. Makes me glad our old bridge got washed away actually. Cringe now when I think the weight I used to go over it with.

The problem here is it wasn’t personal risk,
Would I walk over that bridge, Yes
Would I drive a normal quad over, Probably Yes,
Would I expect to take over, or tell someone to take over that bridge 10 persons on or in a Gator and trailer , definitely No !!

The paying customers and staff shouldn’t need to do the assessments, no more than I would ask to see the engineering calculations before I go in a ride at Alton Towers. But the landowner and the shoot organiser should have thought it through and checked that the structure was capable of the intended load. And the driver should have had appropriate training too, such that they also spotted the hazard.
Will be interesting to see who is getting charged and what with.
