Were they still using the flexi walled silage clamp, I see the structure was still in place. It was put up by the NIAE in 71 when I was there. Filled it then with a tractor and blower rather than buckrake

Yes, and didn‘t it have some gizmo to fill the clamp, and then to unload again?

When I was there it was filled with a tractor and blower fed by a dump box which the trailers tipped into.
I am unaware of it having any self unloading feature. I think we saw it filled in the summer I finished, so was not there in the Autumn.

Just used as normal silage pit when I was there,
I did part middle year on the farm, then worked on college farm after I finished college, for 3 yrs.

I’m not quite sure if it was built in 1970 or 1971, but I seem to remember that in the first season it had a big auger full width of the clamp. Designed to fill it then empty it again. I used to have some photos of it so I’ll have a hunt.

I was 70-72 and certainly remember the building of what was hoped by the designers to be a horizontal tower silo, so you are probably absolutely correct that it had a self feeding discharge system.
I took a very keen interest as it was my ambition to go home and convert our own farm from a hay based system to silage.
I dont think I was very impressed with the dump box and bloweridea which seemed to slow the process right down.
