Modern Tech and the inherent profitability of dealer only access to tech.

I have just stumbled across this on youtube, whilst it is focusing on JD, it is appicable to all the brands and the tech with which modern farm equipment is enhanced, and held hostage by. I found this unusually interesting and informative for an American documentary.

Lots on YouTube about it.i think Biden in USA has given farmers the right to repair their own stuff in certain states and making info available.

Vag com is not dealers it’s 3rd party although it is excellent, and reasonably priced.

the dealers should be providing all this I believe is the argument, especially in the tractor world, I don’t know of any 3rd party suppliers like in the car world of such software.

The funny thing is my son has to go round to the local vw dealer to do the odd programming diagnostic job for them as their official system is lacking. He has a good relationship with them as he served his time with them and they scratch each others backs.

A few miles away from me an independent auto electrician sorts out all the problems the main car dealers can't fix .

Unfortunately some tractor brands could do with someone smart to problem solve as they end up getting the dealer to fire parts at a tractor but usually its something else. Good job it was under warranty, quite frankly some firms haven't a clue and other dealers just get on with it quietly and professionally .
A good dealer with good staff usually results in a quick fix a reasonable bill and a happy customer.

Tractors are like aircraft? Righto.....

There are plenty of aftermarket diagnostic options for tractors (and trucks and excavators and bulldozers), most good independent workshops will have the right gear for the job. As systems get more complex, it takes longer for the aftermarket stuff to catch up, but it generally gets there in the end. I don't really see what the problem is tbh.

All I saw in that video was a bunch of dumb old hick farmers with too much money, buying big expensive gear packed with overcomplicated electronic bulls**t because they "need" it, then bitching and moaning because they're too dumb to fix it themselves? What did they expect was going to happen?

The real crime is how much the CEO is getting paid.

It's getting to be everywhere. You don't buy computer software any more, you rent it. And when the computer is sold with software already installed, the new owner will get a nagger from the software creator until he too agrees to rent. I was taught that when you've bought, it's yours and the seller has no further control. Not any more! Buy obsolete?

Surely a problem is that in the Ag world there are not the back street mechanic/ dealers in any number like there is with cars.
The only people this would appeal to are the Few very large second hand tractor dealers, not Jo who works from the back of his van and specialises in one make.
There is a gross difference also that Ag mechanics tend to repair vehicles often diving deep into gear boxes . Hydraulic valve chests etc.
With cars the back street man is just changing parts, and those parts are often re engineereed by specialists in their own field such as gearboxes engines etc.

It’s got nothing to do with being a “dumb old hick”. You aren’t allowed access to everything and their main argument for this is hilariously weak.

What exactly are you talking about? What aren't you allowed to access?

"If they were given access to the operating system, they knew what they had to do to repair that".

Did they really? From my experience, Joe Blow (the farmer/car/truck/digger/bulldozer driver) can't even carry out basic maintenance without f*cking the job up, hell he can't even do basic checks at the start of the day without f*cking it up.......I certainly wouldn't trust him to diagnose and fix a fault correctly.

But diagnostics is easy right? Just plug the laptop in and it'll tell you what the problem is, or just ask the "operating system".

What on earth are they talking about with the right of repair act from 2012 that "opened the floodgates"? Independent mechanics have been working on vehicles packed with "chips" for decades. Same story again, those that are competent enough will invest in the right diagnostic gear to do the job properly, the others get left behind.

I really don't get it.

If you buy an ordinary computer and decide you then don't like the operating system or programs on it, then there are plenty of alternative software you could replace them with.
