The war in Ukraine...

Its their gas and energy policy that has and is tying their hands behind their backs. You would have to ask Merkel and others why they let it happen.....................possibly to do with their Greens ? I had a German girlfriend for most of the 1980s and was there alot,so can only speak from my limited experience there.
I've some very good German friends, admittedly they are CDU supporters, but not vehemently so. They and most of their circle think that abandoning nuclear was daft, they don't know anyone - including those who nominally support the SPD - who thinks that stopping nuclear before getting an alternative fully running was a good idea.

I guess the Greens did think so, but not many others.

With hindsight we should have forged ahead with our own nuclear power station building programme. Maybe still time. I quite like Rolls Royce mini reactors. Quick and cheap to build. A bit of British innovation. Bring it on.
There is nothing cheap or quick about the concept. A number of countries have been working on the concept for a number of years. France has been working on them for around ten years, but still don't expect the first operational one to be ready before 2029/30. One problem the UK has in particular is its neglect of the nuclear industry for decades, with the consequential effect of a big shortage of people with the necessary knowledge and experience to move these projects rapidly.

But cheaper and quicker than a large scale nuclear reactor that has the potential turn into a huge slobbering volcano of radioactive material.
I agree about the neglect. We handed it all over to China by and large, though a lot of turbine blade theory actually came originally from Chinese academia. They are not daft. Just held back by the regime at times. I was involved in transfer of conventional power station technology to the Chinese back in the 1990’s. It raised more than few eyebrows in technical circles in the U.K. and was considered a mistake but Arnold Weinstock wasn’t going to be persuaded to hold on to GEC so that was the end of that. Watched the huge machine tools get sold to foreign dealers at Trafford Park. And off they went on Dutch low loaders or were cut up on site for scrap. A bit like watching all your farm machinery get sold off before getting the contractors in or letting it.

Putin has put his nuclear forces on high alert. Seems a bit grumpy. One too many HRT patches I fear. Seriously though the Russian military has a choice. Many more dead and the world united against them or Putin having a "stroke" and having to retire.
His running out of friends it would seem. There is a 'referendum' in Belarus today about weather they allow Russian nuclear weapons to be stationed in their country. The outcome was probably decided days ago.

EDF now run the British nuclear show and since they have the knowledge and expertise (and the ability to forge pressure vessels), it's a good thing.

I don't think the RR project involves EDF, but I think the French nuclear constructer Assystem is a partner and they hope to have the first one running by the early/mid 2030's.

Its because of their shameful past that they are still acutely aware of. They just dont want to get involved in any other wars, unless they are almost forced into it.
Perhaps the UK gov should think of the places it has helped to feck up in the past and take note

And rightly so.

Anyhoo.........Am I the only one to be slightly nervous about Germany and it's sudden interest in arming itself ? Doesn't take much to swing missile launchers around by 180 degrees in the future..........
FFS the whole western world has been imploring them to get involved, and they have ..........eventually. The other best thing they could do is get some gas storage tanks built bloody quick at Hamburg/Lubeck to take some US gas.

They can't win can they? They were panned for coming late to Ukrainian assistance, panned for not offering up their "share" in NATO

Oh careful or @Danllan will be along calling you all sorts
Or just highlighting a truth you don't care for. :)

Daft, there is nothing on which to compare modern Germany with its Nazi past, it is - admittedly belatedly - just pulling its weight as part of NATO, which is a good thing.

Armies that are commanded by those without democratic accountability are the problem. (y)
