Like all political leaders, they are remembered by what they got wrong,or their mistakes..........................a bit like goalkeepers.Merkel was meant to be a strong leader, looks less strong as time goes by

I've some very good German friends, admittedly they are CDU supporters, but not vehemently so. They and most of their circle think that abandoning nuclear was daft, they don't know anyone - including those who nominally support the SPD - who thinks that stopping nuclear before getting an alternative fully running was a good idea. Its their gas and energy policy that has and is tying their hands behind their backs. You would have to ask Merkel and others why they let it happen.....................possibly to do with their Greens ? I had a German girlfriend for most of the 1980s and was there alot,so can only speak from my limited experience there.
There is nothing cheap or quick about the concept. A number of countries have been working on the concept for a number of years. France has been working on them for around ten years, but still don't expect the first operational one to be ready before 2029/30. One problem the UK has in particular is its neglect of the nuclear industry for decades, with the consequential effect of a big shortage of people with the necessary knowledge and experience to move these projects rapidly. With hindsight we should have forged ahead with our own nuclear power station building programme. Maybe still time. I quite like Rolls Royce mini reactors. Quick and cheap to build. A bit of British innovation. Bring it on.
But cheaper and quicker than a large scale nuclear reactor that has the potential turn into a huge slobbering volcano of radioactive material. There is nothing cheap or quick about the concept. Indeed it is. Forward basing of troops. Hopefully get the Leopard 2 replacement sorted too. Some decent heavy armour is still required. Though wel equipped mobile infantry seems to be our future?Good to see the new resolution of the German Government.
His running out of friends it would seem. There is a 'referendum' in Belarus today about weather they allow Russian nuclear weapons to be stationed in their country. The outcome was probably decided days ago.Putin has put his nuclear forces on high alert. Seems a bit grumpy. One too many HRT patches I fear. Seriously though the Russian military has a choice. Many more dead and the world united against them or Putin having a "stroke" and having to retire.
Rather bizarre it took Putin to achieve what Trump couldn't! Real politik.Good to see the new resolution of the German Government.

Yep EDF have the ability to cock up building nuclear plants, They have an excellent track record of doing just that.EDF now run the British nuclear show and since they have the knowledge and expertise (and the ability to forge pressure vessels), it's a good thing.
I don't think the RR project involves EDF, but I think the French nuclear constructer Assystem is a partner and they hope to have the first one running by the early/mid 2030's.EDF now run the British nuclear show and since they have the knowledge and expertise (and the ability to forge pressure vessels), it's a good thing.
Perhaps the UK gov should think of the places it has helped to feck up in the past and take noteIts because of their shameful past that they are still acutely aware of. They just dont want to get involved in any other wars, unless they are almost forced into it.
Oh careful or @Danllan will be along calling you all sortsPerhaps Brexiteers will finally realise they were played by Putin and the Tories he compromised
And rightly so.Oh careful or @Danllan will be along calling you all sorts
FFS the whole western world has been imploring them to get involved, and they have ..........eventually. The other best thing they could do is get some gas storage tanks built bloody quick at Hamburg/Lubeck to take some US gas.And rightly so.
Anyhoo.........Am I the only one to be slightly nervous about Germany and it's sudden interest in arming itself ? Doesn't take much to swing missile launchers around by 180 degrees in the future..........
They can't win can they? They were panned for coming late to Ukrainian assistance, panned for not offering up their "share" in NATOAnd rightly so.

Or just highlighting a truth you don't care for.Oh careful or @Danllan will be along calling you all sorts
Daft, there is nothing on which to compare modern Germany with its Nazi past, it is - admittedly belatedly - just pulling its weight as part of NATO, which is a good thing. And rightly so.
