I'm a big advocate of trophy hunting. Especially in Africa where if an animal has a financial value it gets to stay if it doesn't the locals wipe them out. For example elephants. Guess where they're not endangered? In the countries they can be hunted. In fact they've got a surplus. Guess where they are endangered? In the countries they're not legally allowed to be hunted. Because they've got no value to the locals and they'd rather shoot them and wipe them out than get stomped to death walking to get water or have their meagre crops eaten in 20 minutes by a greedy elephant.
Some blonde bird wanting to shoot a feral blackie on a Scottish mountain side willing to pay a fortune? Not a problem. She'll have paid a huge amount of money to do it. She'll have had to rent a hotel, She'll have had to pay a taxidermist to preserve it, She'll have had at least one night out in the village pub. She'll have brought more to the area financially to shoot 1 old tup than a whole family of standard tourists on holiday for a fortnight. Christ @unlacedgecko could be a millionaire with his shetlands 😉 joking matey.

Surely it would take some sort of a stalker to get near enough to a Soay though? 🤔
I've spoken to several pro hunting guides from South Africa to Canada. Apparently the biggest part of the job is putting on a real show of tracking the animal and finding the "right one", over a period of days. Rather than just going straight to the spot where they know the quarry will be, as it's a known feeding spot/bait point.

You rattle the plastic bucket and I'll shoot it.

From my limited, thankfully secondhand, knowledge of them, they’d be 5 miles away and not hear the bucket, even if someone had been daft enough to try to train them to one.

To be certain of a kill, you’d likely have to nuke a 5 mile radius, then look through the dust for the skull to mount on the wall…
