Orientate the windows to the south and get the benifit of natural light.
Insulation. I saw a section of a German house wall. Wood framed with void filled with hemp. Then 6" of foam covered with expanded metal and Tirolean finish.
"This house does not really need heating" That is what the guide told me.
I have a photo of a section of wall and can find if there is interest.
Another feature I have see in central Europe is a huge block oftern covered with ornate tiles In the middle is a wood fire . The block acts a a giant heat store. If you have the time go have a look at Czech , Austrian and South German houses. The make us look as though we are in the dark ages.
I feature I saw in the Ardennes / France was french double doors fully glazed instead of windows.
I guess security would be a concern.
This place was close to Charlivile where the Germans came through in 1940

Probably a bit late now but to add to all the good ideas here, I would put a laundry Shute in. Possibly even a laundry room/drying room setup. It’s a sh!t job and may as well make it as easy as possible.

whys isn't it more common to have mashing machine and tumble drier upstairs? saves carrying everything down and back up again (leaving it on the stairs)

We put a chute from the children's bathroom into the laundry. I still can't get them to put the washing into it!

It isn't a cheap thing to do properly, the fire regs are the killer. We managed to pick a kit up for 200 quid but it should have been 1500+

Recently back from Austria.
There were a few houses getting built in the village we were staying.
It was a proper Alpine village 1000m up surrounded by peaks upto 2400 so cold in winter
The houses were so functional and good spaces. The walls were poured walls with precast floors on top with copper flat roofs on top, though a few had passive water heating systems aswell.
These buildings had integrated open garages, verandahs or awnings.
I would love one but imagine the sucking of teeth by local planners, and talk of local style and nothing about major efficiency.
Kachelofen is the name of the tiled stoves, that act like big storage heater.
