Swallows 2022

I took part in a formal BTO survey a few years ago, surveying for feeding ('swooping') swallows. Once the research was collated, there was, as expected, a strong relationship between swallow abundance and grazing livestock as well as a link to water (insects again). Very few swallow passes seen over arable or grassland without livestock or water within a few '00 m.
They will soon find a mower cutting grass as I presume it disturbs the insects and makes easy hunting

Just one shown up so far - a scout perhaps . I had quite a lot of ladybirds overwinter in my office (as usual ) The last ones flew last night through the open window . A few bumble bees too , but surprisingly , no butterflies this winter . I think it was Kidds who said that ladybirds generated a bit of a stink when they overwinter , but no smells this year . Glad about that as I quite enjoy playing host to them during the bad weather .

At long last I have seen my first Swallows of the year on the farm. Very late for us here. Usually expect to see them about 10th April. So glad that at least some have made it.
