In Wales you now need a Doctors proforma, basically saying the Doctor doesn't think you are mad, anyway, costs £50!

Rang them to make sure as when i googled my doctor (not been for 15 years) He's now a vicar !!!!
Said they would be getting a report from someone who's never even met me but they still wanted me to do it.

In Northumberland you just ignore it. Couple of weeks later your certificate will drop on the mat. The firearms officer told our local keepers to ignore it. The letter reads as if it’s compulsory but it is not. ( at least it wasn’t couple of years ago) I am totally against it if you’ve never been to the doctors and they don’t know you.

I got an invoice from my health centre for the certificate together with a note saying they wouldn't issue the certificate until I'd paid. I replied that as I'd already been sent my certificates, I wouldn't need the doctor's certificate so I wouldn't be paying! So that's 10 years I haven't had a doctor's certificate. It's so obvious I am a genius, they don't bother!

On with renewal now for shot gun & fire arms. First renewal that I’ve had to do this - anyway……. took it of to surgery to be told 4 - 6 WEEKS, doctors very busy - £40 cash only on collection. ( thought i’d gone to local Chinese take away). Anyway “The Fuzz” are already writing to me - chasing it up.
Next time I post i’ll probably be out on bail or behind bars

Last renewal the doctors referred me to a commercial service which is supposed to get your records and check them. In spite of applying months ahead time went on and they did nothing. Eventually I got our doctors surgery to relent and they provided me with one. I never got the£60 back from the company and got a£50 invoice from the surgery. The firearms department of Dyfed Powys police were good, however a friend who forgot to renew has had all his guns seised so it's important not to leave things to the last moment.

Use MedCert if your doctor is uncooperative or busy, costs £60 (£50 if a member of certain organizations), I haven't used them myself as my doctor did do a letter for me without delay for less than that.
However I have heard of extortionate rates being charged by certain practices for letters - £100+. If I was in that instance I'd be using MedCert myself as that is what's advised on the shooting forums I use.

My doctors charged £50 for the service; my cousin with a different surgery had to pay £120!

A doctor can refuse to do something if it conflicts with their personal beliefs/values etc. In this instance they would have to pass your request to someone else or pass on a referral to another doctor.

£40 + VAT make sure you get a Receipt !! its just a con mind the whole thing
It was Medcert. Couldn't remember the name. One of the problems is caused by the archaic way records are transferred from doctors via a central distribution point.

CRB,DBS etc checks all done by Gov.uk so why not link medical history on too???

Since the doctor has to notify the police if you are mentally unstable and have guns it is all another big con and tax by the back door. I'd love to know what doctors in a rural area are making if it's all to be paid in cash or cheque! Is it taxable and declared? Or is that just me being cynical again?
