Relocating Swallows

Having just seen the first swallow return to the farm this year, it’s reminded me that I’d like to try and encourage them to nest elsewhere if possible.

One of their nesting spots is in one of the old stone barns but it’s currently being converted. They don’t seem to like any of the bigger farm buildings, perhaps they’re too open? Is there anything I can do to encourage them to nest in the bigger barns? I’m happy to make a few nesting sites for them and cut some small entry holes in the shed, I’m just not sure how to go about it!

Also, if there’s anything I can do to encourage swifts and house martins to return that would be good. They haven’t nested here for many years. Thanks

Not any help but a couple of years ago I found in a shed two young swallows on the floor, the nest had collapsed abs fallen to the ground. I used a plastic small bowl screwed it near where the nest had been filled it with straw and lined it with the old nest. Lifted the chicks back in and she reared them out of the mock nest.

Unless you've already got swifts in your neighbourhood, they're are extremely difficult to attract. We put up a swift box and played a cd of their calls all day from a window near it. On one occasion, we had them flying round and round the house, obviously attracted by the recordings. They were just in the village that day for a feed over the river.

Nails or screws (not too long ) driven in on the side of purlins will help them 'stick' a nest in place and keep it there,if theve had a nest fall they will take steps to not have it happen again ime.
Seems lolike these days here its too dry like atm for them to scoop up enough mud to build so a little pond with muddy banks or a few maintained muddy puddles might help i guess.
but as above Swallows are also devils to get to nest where you want them too :banghead:

near a collie being housed we find they seem a bit to favour, as our collies will never touch them even if a fledgling falls from the nest. they seem to sense that here ,along with the fact that the dogs keep cats away from a particiular area i guess.
