PTO Guard replacements

While I agree with having PTO guards I also think if you are going to get in between a tractor and power harrow with the PTO running then no amount of guarding or legislation is going to save you from your own stupidity and lack of common sense.
I will join others and recommended the bareco ones.

Trouble is if you employ someone who is daft enough to take the risk and your not guarded up in the event of an accident we all know the outcome ! with everything you have to be prepared for the stupid people to cover your own arse

The wide angle walterscheid ones that have a rib on the guard tubing so you only have to have a chain at the machine end are very good. Normal wide angle waltersheid one on the zero grazer lasted about 2 weeks, whereas the ribbed one has last 3 years so far. Not cheap tho!

+1 for Bareco guards.

A few years ago, my (ex) neighbour didn't come home for lunch one day. The wife went out and found the poor sod spinning at 540rpm, he'd managed to get himself tangled up in the (unguarded) PTO shaft while rushing to get some urea on before the rain came.

Why was he anywhere near the driveshaft in the first place? Who knows. It doesn't matter how many safety devices are in place, stupid people will always find exciting ways to injure or kill themselves. Give the man a Darwin Award. But.....maybe if a working PTO guard was in place that day, that family would still have a father/husband.

Anyway, farm sold, family moved away to get away from it all and the whole thing has been forgotten. But it does make you stop and think before doing something dumb.

It's all very well saying that people should not be near live pto at any time but surely the reason that guards are there in the first place is for those times when you can get a brain fog or are stupid tired and aren't thinking properly. Having a properly working guard will probably save you to live another day and realise how near you came losing it. There are dangers all around us esp in farming environment where there are many things just waiting to kill us given half a chance but that shouldn't mean we just accept the dangers without at least minimising the chance of them happening. Anything could get us eventually but a glaring no no like a spinning bare shaft is just too obvious a route to a bereaved family for me.

Everything's a hazard. If it's not the unguarded PTO shaft that gets you, it'll be the spreader spinners, the mower blades, the power harrow tines, the fan belts, the bike/machine rollover, the hand brake that should've been on one more click....... the key is to know when it's time to stop, step back, have a cup of tea and a lie down. A farmers work is never done, there's no point trying to get it all done in a day.

Possibly dumb question but
The two chain on the guard is to stop the guard rotation, does each end have to be separate end , tractor, implement or one end to tractor and implement end back to tractor end chain.
Obviously guard cannot rotate and chain isn't flailing.
Not always something on implement to attach to.

Ideally chained at both ends, tractor and implement as only having one means one cover can spin around. Not good for tubes and you're correct sometimes no obvious place to clip chains on some machines.

Reason being imp end of shaft for my wood chipper has a Rattle which causes the chain to chatter , i cannot see what's wrong with the shaft other than it is a loose fit on the spline chipper end .
The Rattle is annoying, clip it to other end no Rattle.
Would loose spline cause wobble?
I bought Shaft n.o.s. And possibly 100 hrs on

Most likely started after i totally blocked the chipper and shear bolt didn't shear.
Stalled mf 65 .

Wood chipper should have a slip clutch. Shear bolt is totally wrong

Oww interesting
Came with no shaft and arboreater would not supply spec.
6 "
I chose a shear, think 6 mm , cant remember, and overrun , as my tractor doesn't have a overrun.
Shear never gone , blocked as few times, the one i mentioned was a major stuffing,

I do rate the machine, just have to be aware volumes ur loading, dampness , leaf.

A shear bolt is for shock impacts, ie topper hitting a stone.
slip clutch for overloading
